Men’s Basketball
(11-15, 10-12 NE-10) Ends Season with Victory, Finishes in 10th-Place Tie
The Saint Michael’s College men’s
basketball team went 1-0 last week in Northeast-10 Conference action, but
narrowly missed the playoffs due to a tiebreaker and finished the season tied
for 10th in the league. The Purple Knights hosted Southern New Hampshire
University on Tuesday and earned a 59-48 victory.
During the lone game of the week, Tyler Schilling '12 (Excelsior,
Minn./Minnetonka) and Travis Warech
'13 (Pine Brook, N.J./Montville) both reached a milestone. Warech became
the 13th junior in Saint Michael's history, and the 41st player overall, to
reach the 1,000-point plateau, while Schilling grabbed eight boards to pass Rich Tarrant '65 and move into fifth
place in program history, finishing with 886 rebounds.
Corey
Crawford '15 (Dover, Del./The Phelps School) led the way with a game-high 13
points to go along with six rebounds, shooting 3-of-3 from deep, while Tom Ward '12 (Brighton, East Sussex,
England/Saint Francis [N.Y.]) also buried a trio of triples en route to 11
points in his final collegiate contest. Derek Knutty '13 (Rocklin,

Ditlefsen '15 (Portland, Ore./Sunset) each added 10 points, with Knutty
going 5-of-6 from the floor with three blocks and Ditlefsen nailing three

Women’s
Basketball (12-15, 9-13 NE-10) Qualifies for NE-10 Tournament, Narrowly Falls
The Saint Michael’s College women’s
basketball team went 1-1 last week against Northeast-10 Conference competition,
including earning a victory over visiting regionally-ranked Southern New
Hampshire University, 72-60, on Tuesday to capture the 10th and final NE-10
Tournament position. The No. 10 Purple Knights narrowly fell at the No. 7
College of Saint Rose, 51-49, in the first round of the NE-10 Tournament on
Friday.
In a must-win game, Nicole Adach '13 (Schenectady, N.Y./Mohonasen) led the Purple
Knights with 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting to lead five players in double
figures against Southern New Hampshire. Coreen
Hennessy '12 (Chatham, N.H./Fryeburg Academy) added 15 points on 11-of-12
free throw shooting to go along with six assists and three steals, while Cara Deroy '14 (Hamden, Conn./Hamden) notched
14 points. Megan Olsen '13 (Glenmont,
N.Y./Bethlehem Central) totaled 11 points off the bench, Caitlin Quinn '12 (Oakdale,
Conn./Montville) collected 10 and Alexa
Long '14 (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) grabbed 10 rebounds. The Penmen were
ninth in the latest NCAA Division II East region rankings.
At Saint Rose, the Purple Knights had a
tying attempt just before the buzzer fall short. Saint Michael's held its 18th
opponent to 60 points or fewer, extending a school record it set earlier this
month. Olsen paced the Purple Knights with 15 points and five boards, while
Adach added 11 points and seven rebounds. Hennessy had eight points in her
final college game, while Long notched seven points, six caroms and two blocks.
In her last game as a Purple Knights, Samantha
Steinmetz '12 (Washington, Conn./Shepaug Valley) snared seven rebounds.
Men’s Ice Hockey
(6-18-2, 3-14-1 ECAC East, 2-2-1 NE-10) Falls to Saint Anselm in NE-10
Semifinal
The fourth-seeded Saint Michael’s
College men’s ice hockey team dropped its only game last week, falling to No. 1
Saint Anselm College, 1-0, in a Northeast-10 Conference Tournament semifinal on
Saturday.
During a rematch of last year's NE-10
Tournament championship game, Eric
McGuirk '13 (Rehoboth, Mass./Bridgewater Bandits) turned aside 29 shots in
his first postseason outing. He made 26 saves in the opening two periods prior
to the Purple Knights holding a 17-3 advantage in shots during the third
stanza. This was the teams' eighth postseason meeting in the past 13 winters.
Saint Michael's had advanced to three of the past four NE-10 Tournament title
games, two of which had been against Saint Anselm.
Women’s Ice
Hockey (3-22-1, 2-15-1 ECAC East) Falls to Two Division I Squads in ECAC Open
Tournament
The fourth-seeded Saint Michel’s College
women’s ice hockey team went 0-2 last week during the Eastern College Athletic
Conference (ECAC) Open Tournament at Saint Anselm College. The Purple Knights
dropped a 3-0 decision on Saturday in a semifinal match-up to the top-seeded College
of the Holy Cross and then fell 2-0 to third-seeded Sacred Heart University on
Sunday in the consolation game.
Erin
Stevens '13 (Watertown, Conn./Connecticut Polar Bears) earned
all-tournament honors, finishing with 77 saves against the Division I
opponents. Stevens turned aside 38 shots against Holy Cross and made 39 saves
against Sacred Heart, which brought her total to 884 on the year, extending her
own school record while besting the previous mark by 148.
Skiing Takes
10th at Middlebury Carnival, Sandell Earns All-EISA Honors
The Saint Michael's College skiing teams
finished the two-day Middlebury College Carnival on Saturday by taking 10th
place out of 16 teams, as Fredrik
Sandell '15 (Oslo, Norway/Donski Alpine) highlighted the weekend by landing
on the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association (EISA) All-East second team. The
carnival was also the EISA Championship while serving as the NCAA East Regional
Championship.
Sandell took 13th out of 73 starters in
the men's slalom on Friday and fell just 0.64 seconds short of the top 10. On
Saturday, Sandell finished 17th among 73 skiers in the giant slalom and was
0.73 seconds out of the top 10. Carl-Oscar
Bredengen '14 (Reistad, Norway/Donski Alpine) scored both days for the
Purple Knights and took 23rd in the slalom, coming within 0.63 ticks of placing
in the top 20. During the giant slalom, Purple Knights' second- through
fifth-place finishers were within 0.74
seconds of one another, with Kevin O'Brien '12 (Ridgefield,
Conn./Ridgefield), Bredengen, Matt Beers '14 (Wrentham, Mass./King
Philip Regional) and JD Levine '12 (Toronto, Ontario/National Ski
Academy) rounding out the spots, respectively.
Graduate
student Heidi Robbins (Mendon, Vt./Killington Mountain School/Saint
Lawrence) and Gabbi Hall '13 (San Anselmo, Calif./Forest Charter School)
both scored on each day, with Robbins pacing the Purple Knights in the women's
slalom on Friday and then Hall taking the top spot for the Purple and Gold in
the giant slalom on Saturday. Robbins finished 26th in the slalom, and Hall tied
for 17th among 69 skiers in the giant slalom, thanks in part to the
12th-fastest second run in the competition.
Junior Colin
Delaney '13 (Lake Placid, N.Y./National Sports Academy) paced the men's Nordic
team in the 10k freestyle technique on Friday, with a 31st-place finish, just
30 seconds out of the top 20, while Robert Sitzer '12 (Lenox, Mass./Lenox
Memorial) led the Purple and Gold in the 20k classic mass start on
Saturday. Both Sitzer and Delaney scored for Saint Michael's each day. Chloe
Boutelle '15 (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) topped the Saint
Michael's women in the 5k freestyle technique on Friday and in the 15k classic
mass start on Saturday, while Gabrielle Naranja '14 (Fort Kent, Maine/Fort
Kent Community) and Emily Burns '15 (North Creek, N.Y./Johnsburg
Central) also scored both days.
Men's Tennis (4-2, 3-2 NE-10) Falls to Regionally-Ranked Merrimack
The
Saint Michael's College men's tennis team returned to action for the first time
since Oct. 9 on Saturday, falling to Merrimack College, 6-3, at home during
Northeast-10 Conference play. The Warriors sat in fifth place in last week's
Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East region poll.
Nick
Bosco '14 (Glastonbury, Conn./East Catholic)
earned a 6-1, 6-3 victory in the first singles spot, while Kenny Vassallo
'13 (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) picked up an 8-6 win during a pro set at
No. 5. Sam Cieplicki '12 (South Burlington, Vt./New Hampton School)
narrowly lost his opening set, 7-6 during a straight-set defeat at No. 3.
Women's Tennis (7-1, 7-0 NE-10) Remains Perfect in NE-10 with Victory against Merrimack
The
Saint Michael's College women's tennis team pushed its perfect Northeast-10
Conference record to 7-0 and ran its winning streak to seven matches with a 7-2
triumph over visiting Merrimack College on Saturday. The Purple Knights remain
alone in first place in the NE-10.
The hosts claimed a 3-0 advantage heading into
singles thanks to a trio of doubles victories. Alex Dalton '13 (South
Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) and Emily Magee '13 (Queensbury,
N.Y./Queensbury) combined for an 8-0 win at No. 1, while Jean-Marie
McGrath '13 (Niwot, Colo./Alexander Dawson School) and Caroline Martin
'15 (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) sided for an 8-5 victory at two. In the
third position, Emily Ogilvy '12 (Bedford, N.H./Trinity) and Caroline
Toutoungi '15 (Weston, Conn./Weston) notched an 8-4 victory.
In singles play, Dalton yielded just one game during
a straight-set victory at No. 3, and Hannah Benoit '15 (Mystic, Conn./Saint
Bernard School) earned a 6-1, 6-1 win at the fourth spot. Ogilvy and McGrath notched
pro-set triumphs in the fifth and sixth slots, respectively.
