Men’s Basketball
(7-14, 6-11 NE-10) Drops Two Contests to NE-10 Powerhouses
The Saint Michael’s College men’s
basketball team went 0-2 last week, losing Northeast-10 Conference match-ups to
two of the top three teams in the league. The Purple Knights fell at the
University of Massachusetts at Lowell, 74-55, on Tuesday and then fell at
Franklin Pierce University, 64-54, on Saturday.
Senior Tom Ward (Brighton, East Sussex, England/Saint Francis [N.Y.]) led
the Purple Knights with 11 points at UMass Lowell, going 3-of-5 from beyond the
arc, while freshman Corey Crawford
(Dover, Del./The Phelps School) added nine points and seven boards. Junior Travis Warech (Pine Brook, N.J./Montville) contributed
nine points and two blocks, and freshman James
Cambronne (De Bary, Fla./The Winchendon School) also had nine points.
At Franklin Pierce, sophomore Mike Holton Jr. (Portland, Ore./The
Winchendon School) netted a game-high 25 points, hitting 5-of-9 from
three-point range. Crawford added 12 points, going 5-for-10 from the floor.
Senior Tyler Schilling (Excelsior,
Minn./Minnetonka) became just the third Purple Knight in the last 37 years
to pull down his 850th career rebound. Schilling reached the milestone in his
100th game, while the last two players to accomplish the feat, Michel Bonebo '90 and Brian Monahan '08, needed 107 and 108
contests, respectively.
Women’s
Basketball (10-11, 7-10 NE-10) Continues Defensive Surge in Late-Season Postseason
Push
The Saint Michael’s College women’s
basketball team went 1-1 last week in Northeast-10 Conference play, extending
its postseason push by going 4-2 in its last six games. The Purple Knights
picked up a 60-56 victory at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell on
Tuesday before dropping a 73-44 decision at Franklin Pierce University on
Saturday. With five games remaining, Saint Michael's stands ninth in a league
that accepts the top 10 into its postseason.
Junior Nicole Adach's (Schenectady, N.Y./Mohonasen) lay-up with 1:34
remaining broke a tie with UMass Lowell, and the Purple Knights tied a program
record by yielding 60 points or less for the 15th time this season. Adach had
nine points and 10 rebounds, junior Megan
Olsen (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) netted 17 points behind 3-of-5
three-point shooting, while sophomore Cara
Deroy (Hamden, Conn./Hamden) had nine points and six assists. Classmate Alexa Long (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) added
nine points and 11 boards.
Adach and senior Caitlin Quinn (Oakdale, Conn./Montville) each totaled 10 points at
Franklin Pierce. Quinn adding three steals, while Deroy and senior Coreen Hennessy (Chatham, N.H./Fryeburg
Academy) each had seven points.
Men’s Ice Hockey
(6-12-2, 3-10-1 ECAC East, 2-1-1 NE-10) Picks Up Second NE-10 Victory
The Saint Michael’s College men’s ice
hockey team went 1-2 last week, winning its lone Northeast-10 Conference
contest and falling twice in two Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC)
East play. The Purple Knights topped Franklin Pierce University in an NE-10
match-up, 5-2, on Tuesday at home and then fell at New England College, 3-2, on
Friday and at Saint Anselm College, 7-4, on Saturday.
Against Franklin Pierce, five different
players found the back of the net. Juniors Michael Jangro (Reading,
Mass./Valley Jr. Warriors) and Rich Rodeschini (Katonah, N.Y./Canterbury
School) and sophomore Ryan Arsenault (Reading, Mass./New Hampton School)
each tallied a goal and an assist, while juniors Alex Davidson (South
Burlington, Vt./Saint Paul's School) and Dan Evarts (Hinesburg,
Vt./Green Mountain Glades) also scored. Junior Connor Logan (Shelburne,
Vt./Green Mountain Glades) contributed two assists, while classmate Mike
Dizgun (Kirkland, Quebec/OCN Blizzard) stopped 24 shots.
At New England College, Jangro and
freshman Will Cote (Quebec City,
Quebec/Rice Memorial) each tallied a goal, while Higgins contributed two assists. Junior Eric
McGuirk (Rehoboth, Mass./Bridgewater Bandits) saved 20 shots in his third
start of the season.
Freshman A.J. Pieprzak (Barrie, Ontario/Ridley College) tallied two
power-play markers at Saint Anselm, while Logan and freshman John Teulings (Hamden, Conn./Choate
Rosemary Hall) each scored. The marker was the first Teulings' career. Higgins
extended his points streak to five games with two assists, and Dizgun stopped
33 shots.
Women’s Ice
Hockey (3-16-1, 2-13-1 ECAC East) Splits Pair, Improves to 2-1 in Last Three
Games
The Saint Michel’s College women’s ice
hockey team went 1-1 last week in a pair of Eastern College Athletic Conference
(ECAC) East road contests. The Purple Knights defeated Plymouth State
University, 3-2, on Friday and then fell to the University of Southern Maine,
4-1, on Saturday.
At Plymouth State, senior Madelena Santore (Millington, N.J./New Jersey
Rockets) and freshman Kristen
Spulecki (Orchard Park, N.Y./ Buffalo Bison) each tallied a goal and a
helper, with Santore's goal 4:31 into the third period standing up as the
winner. Junior Erin Stevens (Watertown,
Conn./Connecticut Polar Bears) turned aside 21 shots, including 18 in the
final two periods, yielding only a first-period power-play marker.
Freshman Ellia Héroux (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Thunder Bay Queens) tallied the
lone goal at Southern Maine, while junior
Lisa D'Angelo (Suffield, Conn./Kingswood Oxford) and sophomore Macey Thomas (Amherst, Mass./Northfield
Mount Hermon) picked up the assists. The assist was D'Angelo's first point
of the season. Stevens made 26 saves, bringing her total to 656 on the season,
just 80 shy of the program record.
Skiing Finishes
University of Vermont Carnival in 10th Place, Men's Alpine Finishes Fourth in
Slalom
The Saint Michael's College skiing teams
finished the three-day University of Vermont Carnival on Sunday by taking 10th
place out of 15 teams. The men's Alpine squad finished fourth among 12
institutions in the slalom, edging out national power UVM by three points.
Freshman Fredrik Sandell (Oslo, Norway/Donski Alpine) took seventh out of 80
competitors in the men's slalom while posting a 13th-place finish among 74
racers in the giant slalom. Sophomore Carl-Oscar Bredegren (Reistad,
Norway/Donski Alpine) took 12th in
the slalom, and senior JD Levine (Toronto, Ontario/National Ski Academy) was
17th.
Junior Gabbi
Hall (San Anselmo, Calif./Forest Charter School) posted an 11th-place
finish among 68 competitors in the giant slalom, while classmate Christina
Billotti (Massapequa, N.Y./Green Mountain Valley School) was 16th. Saint
Michael's joined Bates College, Dartmouth College, Middlebury College and UVM
as the only schools to place multiple skiers among the top 16. On Saturday, Shannon
Conroy (Auburn, Calif./Home Schooled) took 17th among 72 starters in the
slalom to pace the Purple Knights.
Junior Colin
Delaney (Lake Placid, N.Y./National Sports Academy) paced the Nordic men's
team in both the 10k classic and the 10k free, placing 25th place among
73 varsity competitors in the 10k free. Sophomore Gabrielle Naranja (Fort
Kent, Maine/Fort Kent Community) was the top Saint Michael's finisher for
the women in the 5k classic and the 10k free.
Men's (2-8) and
Women's (5-4) Swimming & Diving's Eileen Mullowney Wins Three Events at
NE-10s
The Saint Michael's College men's and
women's swimming & diving teams competed in the three-day Northeast-10 Conference
Championship at Southern Connecticut State University over the weekend, when
the men took sixth place and the women were seventh.
Senior Eileen Mullowney (Burlington,
Vt./Burlington) won the 50-
(24.23), 100- (52.88) and 200-yard (1:54.67) freestyle events, reaching
provisional qualification for the NCAA Championship in each while breaking the
school records in the 50 and 100 and falling 0.77 seconds short of the 200
mark. Her 50 free showing was 0.01 seconds short of the NE-10 standard.
Mullowney extended her school record to eight all-conference finishes, which
necessitates placing among the top two in a championship final, including having
won five races.
Mullowney
helped a pair of relays set school records, joining sophomore sister Julie
Mullowney (Burlington, Vt./Burlington) for each mark. The Mullowneys sided
with senior Kaytlyn Kelley (Jefferson, Mass./Wachusett Regional) and
junior Corine McAllister (South Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) for the
400 free relay (3:44.24) and swam legs with senior Sammy Sweeney (Waterbury,
Vt./Harwood Union/Franklin & Marshall) and freshman Steph Nadow
(Charlton, Mass./Saint Peter-Marian) for the 400-yard medley (4:17.48).
Julie
Mullowney broke Shauna McMahon's '97 18-year-old record in the 200-yard
breaststroke, clocking in at 2:33.79, while coming within 0.29 seconds of the
50 mark and 0.17 ticks of the 100 record. She, her sister, Kelley and Sweeney
missed the 200 medley relay record by 0.30 seconds, and Kelley was 0.84 ticks
off the 100-yard backstroke standard. The Mullowneys, McAllister and Nadow came
within 1.65 seconds of the 200 free relay record, and Sweeney won the 200-yard
butterfly consolation final.
Freshman diver Joe Vo (Springfield,
Mass./Cathedral) had the highest individual placement for the men, taking
fifth in the one-meter event. In the 200
medley relay, senior Dan Healy (South
Burlington, Vt./South Burlington) and freshmen Aidan Meehan (Levittown, N.Y./Island Trees), Nathan Paluso (Windham, Maine/Windham) and Matt Pearson (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk) combined to take fifth.
Paluso
was 0.58 seconds off the school mark in the 200 breast, and junior Kyle Esposito (Endicott,
N.Y./Union-Endicott) swam the 1,650 free in 17:49.31, which was 8.99 ticks
short of the program standard.
A
pair of relays took seventh, with sophomore Nicholas Lamana (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) swimming a leg
for each. He was joined on the 200 free relay by Esposito, Pearson and senior Chris Jones (Santa Fe, N.M./Saint
Michael's). During the 400 medley relay, Lamana sided with Meehan, Paluso
and sophomore Jack Mulderrig (Rockville
Centre, N.Y./South Side). In the 400 free relay, Esposito, Healy, Meehan
and Paluso each swam legs during a seventh-place showing.
