Skiing Takes
10th at Williams Carnival, Sandell Posts Pair of Top-10 Finishes
The Saint Michael's College skiing teams
finished the two-day Williams College Carnival on Saturday by taking 10th place
out of 16 teams, as Fredrik Sandell '15
(Oslo, Norway/Donski Alpine) highlighted the weekend with a pair of top-10
Alpine finishes. Friday's Nordic races were canceled.
Sandell took ninth among 73 varsity
collegiate skiers in the men's slalom on Friday, due in part to the second-best
second-run time in the competition (45.03), which was just 0.08 seconds behind
the leader. On Saturday, Sandell took second out of 73 in the giant slalom, finishing
0.26 seconds short of the winner. Carl-Oscar

the 73-racer event. Chloe Boutelle '15 (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga

Women's (5-4) Swimming & Diving Teams Finish Sixth at NEISDA Championship
The Saint Michael's College men's and
women's swimming & diving teams both finished sixth when the New England
Intercollegiate Swimming & Diving Association (NEISDA) Championship came to
an end on Sunday, as the teams combined to break 18 of the programs' 46
swimming records. The women competed among 22 institutions, and the men were in
a 13-school field, with their high standings coming despite not sending
competitors to the previous weekend's diving portion of the meet.
Eileen Mullowney '12 (Burlington,
Vt./Burlington) was named Women's Swimmer of the Meet after winning
the 50- (24.14), 100- (52.70) and 200-yard (1:53.60) freestyle events, reaching
provisional qualification for the NCAA Championship in each while breaking the school
records in all three. She played a role in seven school records over the
weekend while falling 0.57 seconds short of the 19-year-old meet mark in the
200. Mullowney finished with five career victories at NEISDA meets, having also
won twice as a freshman.
Mullowney helped
four relays set school records, joining sister Julie Mullowney '14
(Burlington, Vt./Burlington) and Kaytlyn Kelley '12 (Jefferson,
Mass./Wachusett Regional) for each mark. The trio joined Sammy Sweeney
'12 (Waterbury, Vt./Harwood Union/Franklin & Marshall) for third-place
showings in the 200- (1:51.37) and 400-yard (4:05.49) medleys. The trio swam
legs with Steph Nadow '15 (Charlton, Mass./Saint Peter-Marian) on the
third-place 200 free relay (1:40.72) and Corine McAllister '13 (South
Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) for the fifth-place 400 free relay
(3:42.34).
Julie
Mullowney set school records in the 50- (31.53), 100- (1:08.73) and 200-yard
(2:32.80) breaststroke events, including breaking Shauna McMahon's '97 18-year-old
school mark in the 100. She was third in the 50 and fourth in the 100. Kelley
placed second in the 50-yard backstroke (27.83), breaking Cassie Littlefield's
'04 11-year-old record and coming within 0.02 seconds of the winning
swimmer. Nadow was fifth. Kelley also placed fifth in the 100 back, coming
within 0.21 seconds of another 11-year-old Littlefield mark. Sweeney broke the
200-yard butterfly (2:16.14) record during trials before taking eighth in the
finals. In all, Julie Mullowney had a role in seven school records, Kelley had
a hand in five and Sweeney put her name on three.
Dan Healy '12 (South Burlington,
Vt./South Burlington) had a hand
in four school records, while Nathan
Paluso '15 (Windham, Maine/Windham) aided three. Healy set a mark in the
100 back (54.27) - taking fourth - and the 200 back record in trials (1:59.73)
before finishing the finals in sixth. Healy also notched a record showing of
48.90 in a 100 free time trial. He and Paluso joined Michael Sprague '12
(Sharon, Mass./Sharon) and Aidan Meehan '15 (Levittown, N.Y./Island
Trees) to capture fifth place in the 800 free relay in 7:26.99.
Paluso
was seventh in the 200-yard individual medley (2:02.93) and set a mark in the 200
breast (2:18.16) during trials before taking eighth in the finals. Sprague was
seventh in the 1,000 free, Kyle Esposito
'13 (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) was eighth in both the 1,000 and 1,650
free races, and Andrew Marshall '13
(Kittery, Maine/Saint Thomas Aquinas/Saint Joseph's [ME]) was ninth in the
1,650. All three approached school records. Meehan took eighth in the 200 free,
while he, Healy, Paluso and Nicholas
Lamana '14 (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) combined for a seventh-place
finish in the 400 medley relay.
Eileen Mullowney will now await word on
whether she becomes the first swimming & diving student-athlete in Saint
Michael's history to qualify for the NCAA Championship, as the entry lists will
be revealed on Feb. 29. Based on national results entering the weekend, her
performances at NEISDAs would have had her tied for 43rd in Division II in the
50 free and alone in 49th and 34th in the 100 and 200, respectively. At the
2011 NCAA Championship, 56 swimmers qualified for the 50 free, 58 for the 100
free, and 50 for the 200 free.
