Men’s Basketball
(7-12, 6-9 NE-10) Drops Two Contests by a Combined 10 Points
The Saint Michael’s College men’s
basketball team went 0-2 last week, losing two Northeast-10 Conference
match-ups by a combined 10 points. The Purple Knights fell to Assumption
College on the road, 85-81, in overtime on Wednesday and then hosted Le Moyne
College on Saturday, dropping a 70-64 decision. Saint Michael's has suffered
eight setbacks by six points or less this winter.
Senior Tyler Schilling (Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka) led the Purple
Knights with a season-high 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting at Assumption, while sophomore
Mike Holton Jr. (Portland, Ore./The
Winchendon School) netted 16, going 3-for-4 from three-point range.
Freshman Corey Crawford (Dover, Del./The
Phelps School) extended the game into overtime by knocking down a
three-pointer at the buzzer before finishing with 14 points and five assists,
going 3-of-4 from three. Senior Tom Ward
(Brighton, East Sussex, England/Saint Francis [N.Y.]) contributed nine
points on three buckets from beyond the arc, while freshman James Cambronne (De Bary, Fla./The
Winchendon School) added nine points and three blocks. Junior Derek Knutty (Rocklin, Calif./Whitney)
pulled down eight boards and added three steals.
Cambronne had a breakout performance against
Le Moyne, as he went 8-for-8 while setting season highs with 19 points and five
blocks and matching season bests with six boards and two steals. Crawford went
4-of-6 from beyond the arc en route to 16 points, six rebounds and five
assists, while Holton contributed 12 points.
Women’s
Basketball (9-10, 6-9 NE-10) Wins First Back-to-Back Northeast-10 Conference
Games of Season
The Saint Michael’s College women’s
basketball team went 2-0 last week in Northeast-10 Conference play, posting two
wins by a combined nine points, including one over nationally-ranked Assumption
College. The Purple Knights picked up a 62-56 victory at No. 21 Assumption on
Wednesday before downing visiting Le Moyne College, 63-60, on Saturday. The
Greyhounds' ranking is according to the latest USA TODAY ESPN poll.
The Purple Knights held the Greyhounds
to nearly 16 points below their season average and shot 25-of-33 from the
charity stripe. Junior Nicole Adach
(Schenectady, N.Y./Mohonasen) led the way with 17 points and five boards,
while senior Coreen Hennessy (Chatham,
N.H./Fryeburg Academy) added 15 points. Junior Megan Olsen (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) totaled seven
points, sophomore
Alexa Long (Waterford, Conn./Waterford)
pulled down six boards, and senior Samantha
Steinmetz (Washington, Conn./Shepaug Valley) had five. Sophomore Cara Deroy (Hamden, Conn./Hamden)
handed out five assists.
On Saturday, Hennessy shot a perfect 11-of-11
from the free throw line, hitting the go-ahead free throw with 3:18 left, on
her way to 19 points and a career-best seven steals. Olsen added 10 points and
a career-high seven steals. The Purple Knights totaled 20 steals off of 32
turnovers during the contest and shot 25-of-31 from the free throw line. Adach
contributed 17 points, while Long tallied 11 points and eight rebounds.
Men’s Ice Hockey
(5-10-2, 3-8-1 ECAC East, 1-1-1 NE-10) Earns Consecutive ECAC East Victories
The Saint Michael’s College men’s ice
hockey team went 2-0 last week in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC)
East home contests. The Purple Knights topped the University of New England,
4-1, on Friday and then defeated the University of Southern Maine by a 3-2
count on Saturday.
Against the University of New England, the
Purple Knights snapped a four-game losing streak, thanks in part to junior Eric McGuirk (Rehoboth, Mass./Bridgewater
Bandits), who made a season-high 31 saves in his first career start at
home, picking up his first collegiate win. Classmate Josh Geary (Wellesley, Mass./Phillips Andover Academy) scored
twice, senior Brady Earle (Columbia,
Md./The Gunnery) had a goal and an assist, and junior Justin Castagna (Los Alamitos, Calif./Los Angeles Kings) also tallied
a marker. Freshman Mark Higgins
(Plainville, Mass./Bridgewater Bandits) had two assists.
Saint Michael's picked up its second win
on Saturday against the Huskies, as Geary's tally at 14:29 of the second period
proved to be the game-winner. Higgins finished with one goal and one assist,
while Earle picked up his second goal of the weekend. Freshman A.J. Pieprzak (Barrie, Ontario/Ridley
College) had two assists, and junior Mike
Dizgun (Kirkland, Quebec/OCN Blizzard) finished with 33 saves, including 10
during the final stanza of a one-goal game.
Women’s Ice
Hockey (2-15-1, 1-12-1 ECAC East) Splits Pair, Earns Program's First Overtime
Victory
The Saint Michel’s College women’s ice
hockey team went 1-1 last week at home in Eastern College Athletic Conference
(ECAC) East play. The Purple Knights lost to New England College, 5-0, on
Friday and then defeated in-state rival Castleton State College, 3-2, in overtime
on Saturday. The victory over Castleton State marked the first overtime win in the
Purple Knights' 12-year history.
Against New England College, junior Erin Stevens (Watertown, Conn./Connecticut
Polar Bears) kept the Pilgrims off the board for the first 20 minutes and
finished with 33 saves, including 19
during the second period.
Freshman Maire Bartkus (Acton, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon) tallied 14
seconds into overtime against Castleton State to snap her team's six-game
losing streak. Senior Madelena Santore
(Millington, N.J./New Jersey Rockets) finished with a goal and two assists,
while freshman Kristen Spulecki (Orchard
Park, N.Y./Buffalo Bison) tallied the game-tying marker with 1:05 left in
the final frame. Stevens stopped 29 shots. Santore has 40 points in 41 career
games, as she stands sixth in program history in goals (26) and ninth in
points.
Skiing Finishes
University of New Hampshire Carnival in 10th Place, Jumps Three Spots in Final
Day
The Saint Michael's College skiing teams
finished the University of New Hampshire Carnival on Saturday by taking 10th
place out of 17 teams, vaulting three spots in the final day, as they stood in
13th place after Friday.
After the Alpine events were wiped out
on Friday due to inclement weather, racers earner double points in Saturday's
slalom. Sophomore Carl-Oscar Bredegren (Reistad, Norway/Donski Alpine)
took 21st, senior Nathan Bryant (Lee, N.H./Oyster River) was 29th, and
classmate JD Levine (Toronto, Ontario/National Ski Academy) took 33rd. On
the women's side, junior Gabbi Hall (San Anselmo, Calif./Forest Charter
School) was 30th.
Junior Colin Delaney (Lake Placid, N.Y./National Sports Academy) took 39th
out of 89 skiers during the men's classic sprint on Friday before placing 47th
among 89 on Saturday in the 20K free mass start. Senior Robert Sitzer (Lenox, Mass./Lenox Memorial) was the second Purple
Knight scorer in both events.
Freshman Emily Burns (North Creek,
N.Y./Johnsburg Central) paced the
women in the classic sprint, while sophomore Gabrielle Naranja (Fort Kent,
Maine/Fort Kent Community) and freshman Chloe Boutelle (Saratoga
Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) both scored in the classic sprint and
Saturday's 15K free mass start. Naranja paced the Purple Knights in the latter.
Men's (2-8) and
Women's (5-4) Swimming & Diving Complete Dual Slates, Women Win Twice
The Saint Michael's College men's and
women's swimming & diving teams completed their dual slates last week, with
the men going 0-2 and the women winning twice. The men fell at home, 175-116,
to Norwich University on Tuesday before dropping a 167-121 decision at the
State University of New York at Potsdam by on Saturday. The women downed the
Cadets, 145-82, and the Bears, 143-118.
Against Norwich, senior Dan Healy (South Burlington, Vt./South
Burlington) won the 50- and 100-yard backstroke races, freshman Nathan Paluso (Windham, Maine/Windham) captured
the top spot in the 100 -yard breaststroke, while classmate Joe Vo (Springfield, Mass./Cathedral) won
one of the one-meter diving events.
Each of the four senior women played a
role in at least one victory versus the Cadets, including joining to capture
the 200-yard freestyle relay. Kaytlyn Kelley (Jefferson, Mass./Wachusett
Regional), Kim Marchetti (Hyde Park, Mass./Fontbonne Academy), Eileen
Mullowney (Burlington, Vt./Burlington) and Sammy Sweeney (Waterbury
Center, Vt./Harwood Union/Franklin & Marshall) each swam a leg. Kelley
also won the 50 and 100 back events, and Mullowney topped the 100 and 200 free
fields. Sweeney bested her 100-yard butterfly competitors, and Marchetti won
the 50 fly while siding with sophomores Jill Connors (Dedham,
Mass./Archbishop Williams) and Grace Kahn (Fairhope, Ala./Bayside Academy)
and freshman Steph Nadow (Charlton, Mass./Saint Peter-Marian) for the
top 200-yard medley relay quartet. Sophomore Julie Mullowney (Burlington,
Vt./Burlington) won the 50 free, 50 breast and 100 breast, and Kahn won the
500 free. Junior Corine McAllister (South Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury)
won the 100-yard individual medley, and sophomore Maddie Craig (Westwood,
Mass./Westwood) triumphed in the 1,000 free.
At SUNY Potsdam, Sprague won the 500 and
1,000 free races, Healy won the 50 back, and Vo was victorious in both
one-meter diving competitions. Eileen Mullowney won all four events she
entered, including the 100, 200 and 500 free races. She also anchored the
winning 400 relay quartet that included Kelley, Julie Mullowney and freshman Kathleen Lamontagne (Manchester,
N.H./Trinity). Kelley won the 50 back, and Julie Mullowney topped the 50
breast field.
