Baseball (4-9,
1-3 NE-10) Earns First NE-10 Win in 14 Years and First Conference Shutout Since
1993
The Saint Michael's College baseball
team went 1-3 last week while playing in its first Northeast-10 Conference games
in 14 years. The Purple Knights fell at nationally-ranked Southern Connecticut
University, 9-2 and 7-4, on Saturday before claiming a 1-0 victory at the
University of New Haven on Sunday in the first contest and then dropping the
nightcap, 6-2.
Andrew
Kelley '13 (Lincoln, N.H./Lin-Wood) yielded three earned runs in five frames
while striking out two during the first contest against Southern Connecticut
State, which was ranked as high as seventh in one national poll. Jacob Begnoche '13 (Essex Junction,
Vt./Essex) went 2-for-4 with a walk, while Chris Puliafico '14 (Sharon,
Mass./Sharon) had a hit, an RBI and
a walk. Don McGuirl '15 (Warwick, R.I./Saint Sebastian's School) drove
in a run, and Nicky Elderton '15
(Shelburne, Vt./Rice Memorial) doubled. In game two, Collin Fishman '13 (Bethesda, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) struck
out four and allowed just two hits in 3.1 innings, while Tyler Wild '14 (Quaker
Hill, Conn./Saint Bernard School) had
a 3-for-5 game and helped his team grab a 3-0 edge. George Buteau '15 (South
Burlington, Vt./Trinity-Pawling School) had two hits, a run and an RBI,
while McGuirl and Alec Tice '14
(Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) each had two knocks. Saint Michael's plated
four runs on 10 hits in five innings against an Owl pitcher who had yielded no
runs on six hits in 14 frames this year.
Austin
Ziskie '12 (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) delivered a
three-hit shutout against New Haven, where he fanned nine in nine innings and
walked only two in the program's first shutout since March 1, 2001, and first
conference shutout since April 26, 1993. Tim
McDonnell '12 (Durham, N.H./Oyster River) drove in the game's only run,
plating Elderton, who joined Begnoche in smacking doubles. During the nightcap,
Andrew DuPrat '13 (Fairfax,
Vt./BFA-Fairfax) struck out three in 7.2 innings of work, while Elderton
was 3-for-4. Wild had two hits and Tice had two walks. McGuirl and Jason Moore '14 (Avon, Conn./Northwest
Catholic) both drove in runs, including when Moore picked up his first
college hit.
Men's Lacrosse
(5-1, 1-1 NE-10) Picks Up First Conference Win of Season, Extends Win Streak to
Four
The Saint Michael's College men's lacrosse
team won its only game last week, picked up its first conference victory of the
season. The Purple Knights, who received votes toward last week's United States
Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) national poll, claimed a 10-3 win
at Assumption College on Saturday.
Marty
Vanzo '13 (Westford, Vt./Essex/Vermont) led the Purple Knights with four markers
and one assist, all in the first half, while Connor Glackin '14 (South Huntington, N.Y./Saint Anthony's) tallied
the first two markers of the game. Kevin
Hunt '12 (Johnstown, N.Y./Johnstown) had a goal and two assists, and Andrew Buccellato '12 (Glen Rock, N.J./Don
Bosco Prep) recorded a goal and a helper to push his career point total to
99. Paul Tortora Jr. '12 (Fairfield,
Conn./Fairfield Prep) and Tim
McDonald '14 (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) each tallied a goal, scoring 46
seconds apart early in the fourth quarter, while Peter Hanson '12 (Andover, Mass./Andover) had seven ground balls
and six caused turnovers. Chris Casserly
'14 (Kensington, N.H./Exeter) was 7-of-11 on draws, and Chris DeMairo '14 (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage)
earned the victory with six saves.
Women's Lacrosse
(2-3, 0-2 NE-10) Falls to Two Nationally-Ranked Teams, Stays Close with No. 7
Stonehill
The Saint Michael's College women's
lacrosse team went 0-2 last week, dropping contests to two nationally-ranked
opponents in three days. The Purple Knights lost an 11-9 decision on Thursday to
Stonehill College, which was tied for seventh in the Intercollegiate Women's
Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) national poll, before slipping to No. 1 Le
Moyne College by a 13-1 count at home on Saturday.
Eliza Scoba '12 (Franklin,
Mass./Franklin)
led the Purple Knights with two goals and two assists against Stonehill, while Courtney Piper '15 (Wolfeboro,
N.H./Brewster Academy) had two markers and dished out one assist. Crystal
King '14 (South Burlington, Vt./South Burlington) added two tallies, while Claire Martin '14 (Mattapoisett,
Mass./Bishop Stang) had five draw controls and seven ground balls. Sandy
Palumbo '12 (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) made 10 saves.
During the contest against top-ranked Le
Moyne, Scoba tallied the lone goal for the Purple Knights, while Palumbo made
13 saves and added two ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Softball (3-11,
1-5 NE-10) Opens Conference Schedule with First Victory at Merrimack in Five
Years
The Saint Michael's College softball
team went 1-5 last week during the opening week of its Northeast-10 Conference
schedule. The Purple Knights split a doubleheader at Merrimack College on
Tuesday, claiming an 8-7 victory in the initial contest before falling, 9-1 in
five innings, as they earned their first victory at Merrimack since 2007.
During the earliest home opener in program history, Saint Michael's was swept
by Stonehill College, 7-5 and 7-0, on Saturday before falling against visiting Franklin
Pierce University, 5-2 and 4-2, on Sunday.
Brittany
Cantore '13 (Saint Johnsbury, Vt./Saint Johnsbury Academy) launched her
first career home run while going 2-for-3 with two RBIs in game one against
Merrimack, while Stephanie Frank '13
(Essex, Vt./Essex) and Sarah Murray
'15 (Wallingford, Conn./Sheehan) each drove in two. Frank doubled while
earning the victory, fanning four in a complete-game effort, and Greer Lemnah '14 (Lyndon Center, Vt./Lyndon
Institute) scored twice. In game two, Frank finished with a hit, an RBI and
a walk. Bethany Falls '14 (Essex
Junction, Vt./Essex) doubled and walked, while Lemnah added a single and a
walk. Frank took the loss before Laura
McCormack '14 (Natick, Mass./Natick) struck out four in relief.
During the opener against Stonehill, Frank
yielded only one earned run during a complete-game effort, striking out three
without walking a batter. Brittany Regis
'14 (Monroe, N.H./Saint Johnsbury Academy) was 3-for-4 with two stolen
bases and a double, while Falls went 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBIs and a home
run. Murray tacked on two runs and two hits, including a double. Amanda Brigante '14 (Colchester,
Vt./Colchester) went 2-for-2 in the nightcap, while Carleen McLaughlin '13 (Branford, Conn./Branford) doubled. McCormack
struck out four in five innings.
In the initial game against Franklin
Pierce, Murray was 2-for-3 with an RBI, a run and a double, while Cantore also drove
in a run. Frank struck out two during seven innings. Brigante was 2-for-3 with
an RBI in the second game, while Falls and Lemnah both had a hit and a run.
Cantore doubled, while McCormack allowed two earned runs in four innings and
fanned four before Frank tossed three shutout frames, retiring the final seven
batters.
Men's Tennis (4-3, 3-3 NE-10) Returns After Month Layoff,
Drops Decision to Adelph
The Saint Michael's College men's tennis team lost its only match last
week, dropping a Northeast-10 Conference match to Adelphi University by a count
of 8-1 on Saturday, which was its first match since Feb. 25.
Eric Parziale '13 (Pinehurst,
N.C./Pinecrest) and Nick Bosco
'14 (Glastonbury, Conn./East Catholic) teamed up at No. 1 doubles to
claim the lone Purple Knight victory. Bosco and Parziale nearly took both their
singles matches but eventually lost in three sets at No. 1 and No. 2,
respectively.
Women's Tennis (8-5, 7-1 NE-10) Returns from Florida
Trip and Drops First Conference Match of Season
The Saint Michael's College women's tennis team lost its only match last
week, returning from a Spring Break trip to Florida and dropping an 8-1
decision against regionally-ranked Adelphi University on Saturday. The visiting
Panthers were ranked eighth in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association
(ITA) East region poll.
Alex
Dalton '13 (South Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) earned the lone victory for the
Purple Knights in the second singles slot, while Jean-Marie McGrath '13 (Niwot, Colo./Alexander Dawson School) nearly
completed a comeback but eventually fell in three sets at No. 4. Saint Michael's dropped its three doubles
matches by two points apiece. Eileen
Mullowney '12 (Burlington, Vt./ Burlington) and Emily Magee '13 (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) lost, 8-6, in the top
slot, while McGrath and Caroline Martin
'15 (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) narrowly fell, 9-7, at No. 2. Emily Ogilvy '12 (Bedford, N.H./Trinity)
and Caroline Toutoungi '15 (Weston,
Conn./Weston) dropped an 8-6 decision while holding down the third
position.
