Baseball (10-27, 6-20 NE-10) Walks Off with Win Over Regionally-Regarded Bentley During Week

The Saint Michael's College baseball team went 1-4 at home last week while defeating one regionally-regarded Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division opponent and taking a nationally-ranked foe to extra innings. The Purple Knights fell to in-state rival Middlebury College, 10-5, on Tuesday before slipping, 3-2, in 10 innings to No. 12 Southern New Hampshire University on Wednesday. They finished the week with a three-game set with Bentley University, which was receiving votes toward two regional polls. Saint Michael's fell 4-0 on Friday and 16-0 in the opener of a Saturday doubleheader before claiming a 6-5 walk-off victory in the nightcap.

Alec Tice '14 (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) was 3-for-5 against Middlebury, while Nicky Elderton '15 (Shelburne, Vt./Rice Memorial) had two hits, among them  a triple, to go with two RBIs. Chadwick Estey '12 (New Haven, Vt./Mount Abraham Union) and Nick Nelson '14 (Spofford, N.H./Keene) both added a pair of hits. Nick Myers '14 (Canton, Conn./The Master's School) allowed three runs in five innings.

Against Southern New Hampshire Andrew Kelley '13 (Lincoln, N.H./Lin-Wood) tossed the first nine innings, yielding three hits while striking out nine, walking two and allowing only two fifth-inning runs, while Elderton went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, a double and a home run. Austin Ziskie '12 (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) worked the 10th inning and allowed one run on two hits, fanning one batter.

During the first game with Bentley, Will Corkum '15 (Ipswich, Mass./Ipswich) allowed only one earned run over seven innings, striking out five, before Jesse Sullivan '12 (Saugus, Mass./Pingree School) fired two innings of shutout relief while striking out four. Nelson singled and walked, and Tice added a knock.

Elderton finished with two hits in the nightcap of the doubleheader with Bentley, driving home the winning run with a two-out single in the ninth after the Purple Knights scored four runs in the eighth inning to tie the game. Tice was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a double, Nelson had two hits and two runs, and Bryan Geary '12 (Milton, Vt./Milton/Skidmore) added two knocks. Ziskie tossed the first eight innings before Corey Livingston '14 (Hartford, Conn./East Catholic) earned the win with a scoreless ninth. Tice walked and singled in the first game, Nick Barton '14 (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) picked up his first collegiate hit, and Collin Fishman '13 (Bethesda, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) allowed three earned runs in four innings. Estey finished the week with 104 career hits, good for fifth in program history, and the most by a native Vermonter.

Men's Golf Finishes Second During Final Competition of Season, Goodwin Two Strokes Shy of Leader

The Saint Michael's College men's golf team took part in its final competition of the season, finishing second among three squads at the Franklin Pierce University Spring Invitational at The Shattuck on Thursday. John Goodwin '12 (Wolfeboro, N.H./Kent School) shot a 76 to take second, finishing just two strokes behind the leader in his final collegiate competition, while Steve French '14 (Goffstown, N.H./Goffstown Area) was one stroke behind Goodwin. Nicholas Angelo '13 (Sutton, Mass./Saint John's) tied for fourth by firing a 78, and Dylan Lavallee '13 (Colchester, Vt./Rice Memorial) rounded out the Purple Knights' top four by tying for seventh.

No. 10 Men's Lacrosse (10-4, 6-4 NE-10) Ties Wins Record and Claims Fourth-Seed in NE-10 Tournament

The nationally-ranked Saint Michael's College men's lacrosse team won its only game last week, extending its win streak to four games with a 14-7 Senior Day victory over Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday in Northeast-10 Conference action. The Purple Knights, who are ranked 10th by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA), tied a program record with their 10th win. Fourth-seeded Saint Michael's will host fifth-seeded Saint Anselm College in the first round of the NE-10 Tournament on Tuesday at 2 p.m.

Chris DeMairo '14 (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) made seven saves, setting a program record with his 10th victory, while Pete Donnally '13 (Madison, N.J./Morristown-Beard School) matched a career high with six goals and added an assist. Marty Vanzo '13 (Westford, Vt./Essex/Vermont) had two markers and two assists, while Paul Tortora Jr. '12 (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep) notched a hat trick and had six ground balls. Kevin Hunt '12 (Johnstown, N.Y./Johnstown) had three helpers, Chris Casserly '14 (Kensington, N.H./Exeter) scooped up a game-high seven ground balls and was 16-of-22 on face-offs, and Peter Hanson '12 (Andover, Mass./Andover) caused five turnovers.  Andrew Buccellato '12 (Glen Rock, N.J./Don Bosco Prep), Max Zuccarini '12 (Medfield, Mass./Medfield/Quinnipiac) and Evan Antolino '14 (Exeter, N.H./Exeter) added one goal apiece.

With 90 career goals, Donnally is tied for sixth in program history, just 19 short of the record.

Women's Lacrosse (4-12, 1-11 NE-10) Finishes Season with Triumph Over Nationally-Regarded Queens

The Saint Michael's College women's lacrosse team went 1-2 last week, defeating a nationally-regarded non-conference opponent and seeing Eliza Scoba '12 (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) score her 100th career goal. The Purple Knights lost an 18-6 decision on Tuesday at Southern New Hampshire University in Northeast-10 Conference action before falling at American International College (AIC), 13-10, on Saturday. They finished the week by claiming an 11-9 Senior Day triumph on Sunday over Queens (N.Y.) College, which received votes toward last week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) national poll.

Six different players scored at Southern New Hampshire, including Scoba, who became the seventh player in program history to net 100 career goals. Crystal King '14 (South Burlington, Vt./South Burlington), Shannon Murphy '14 (Boxboro, Mass./Acton-Boxboro Regional/UMass), Kate Boyer '15 (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle), Melissa Jaskiewicz '15 (Kensington, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) and Courtney Piper '15 (Wolfeboro, N.H./Brewster Academy) each contributed a marker. Sandy Palumbo '12 (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) made two saves in 39:09 before Jaskiewicz, who had four caused turnovers, made two saves during the final 20:51.

At AIC, Boyer tallied three goals, and Jaskiewicz and Piper each netted two markers, with Piper adding an assist. Murphy had a goal and two assists, while Scoba and Meghan Hayes '12 (East Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich) also tallied, with Hayes' goal the first of the defender's career. Caitlin Mahoney '13 (Cohasset, Mass./Cohasset) scooped up four ground balls, caused three turnovers and had four draw controls, while Palumbo made 12 saves.

Sarah Fortin '15 (Dover, N.H./Saint Thomas Aquinas) snapped an 8-8 tie against Queens with 13:38 remaining, while Boyer tallied her second hat trick in as many days. King tallied twice, while Murphy and Scoba each scored a goal and added an assist. Jaskiewicz had four draw controls and caused three turnovers, while Hannah Beardsley '15 (Essex, Mass./Manchester Essex Regional) had a goal, three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Palumbo made nine saves, while Alexa Coleman '14 (Boxford, Mass./Masconomet Regional) and Claire Martin '14 (Mattapoisett, Mass./Bishop Stang) each tallied one goal.

Scoba finished her career tied for first in program history in games played (60) while standing sixth in goals (102), seventh in points (138) and ninth in assists (36). Palumbo finished third in saves (549).

Baseball (9-23, 5-17 NE-10) Faces Regionally-Ranked Opponent, Estey Reaches 100 Hits

The Saint Michael's College baseball team went 1-4 last week while facing one regionally-ranked Northeast-10 Conference opponent and seeing Chadwick Estey '12 (New Haven, Vt./Mount Abraham Union) reach 100 career hits. The Purple Knights fell to Saint Anselm College, 1-0, on Tuesday in an NE-10 Northeast Division game before claiming a 15-4 victory at Norwich University on Thursday. They finished the week by playing a three-game set at regionally-ranked University of Massachusetts at Lowell during NE-10 Northeast Division play, falling 4-0 on Friday before being swept in a doubleheader on Saturday, 11-1 and 10-3. UMass Lowell was fifth in last week's New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) poll.

Nick Myers '14 (Canton, Conn./The Master's School) had his best outing of the season against Saint Anselm, yielding one earned run on six hits in five-plus innings while striking out two. Corey Livingston '14 (Hartford, Conn./East Catholic) tossed four frames of shutout four-hit relief, while Estey went 2-for-4.

Andrew Kelley '13 (Lincoln, N.H./Lin-Wood) allowed one run and struck out 10 in six innings at Norwich. Nicky Elderton '15 (Shelburne, Vt./Rice Memorial) was 4-for-5 with three runs, coming within a home run of the cycle, while Nick Nelson '14 (Spofford, N.H./Keene) had a 4-for-6 performance with three RBIs, two runs and a double. Bryan Geary '12 (Milton, Vt./Milton/Skidmore) and Jacob Begnoche '13 (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) both blasted their first collegiate home runs, with Geary finishing with two hits, three runs and four RBIs, while Begnoche had two hits, two runs and three RBIs. Tyler Wild '14 (Quaker Hill, Conn./Saint Bernard School) was 3-for-5 with three runs and a double, Chris Puliafico '14 (Sharon, Mass./Sharon) went 2-for-2 with two RBIs, and Alec Tice '14 (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) added an RBI single. Chris Hoey '12 (Huntington, N.Y./Saint Anthony's) and Jesse Sullivan '12 (Saugus, Mass./Pingree School) combined to toss the final three innings, with Hoey striking out two in two frames, and Sullivan pitching a perfect ninth inning.

During the first game with UMass Lowell, Estey led off the third inning with his 100th career hit, and Will Corkum '15 (Ipswich, Mass./Ipswich) limited the River Hawks to one run during the first 5.1 innings, finishing with three earned runs on five hits in six innings. Nelson, Puliafico and Tim McDonnell '12 (Durham, N.H./Oyster River) each added hits, while Don McGuirl '15 (Warwick, R.I./Saint Sebastian's School) dropped two sac bunts. Barry Maily '15 (Moosup, Conn./Plainfield) tossed two shutout frames of relief.

Nelson was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a double in the opener of the doubleheader with UMass Lowell, while Tice went 2-of-3 while being hit by a pitch. During the nightcap, Elderton was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a double, while Tice was 2-for-4 with two runs. Sullivan fired two innings of scoreless relief.

No. 10 Men's Lacrosse (9-4, 5-4 NE-10) Extends Win Streak to Three Games with Victory at AIC

The nationally-ranked Saint Michael's College men's lacrosse team won its only game last week, extending its win streak to three with a 14-4 Northeast-10 Conference victory at American International College (AIC) on Saturday. The Purple Knights are ranked 10th by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA).

Paul Tortora Jr. '12 (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep) tied a career high with six points, as he tallied one marker and dished off five assists, while Kevin Hunt '12 (Johnstown, N.Y./Johnstown) notched a career-high-tying four goals and one assist. Andrew Buccellato '12 (Glen Rock, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) and Max Zuccarini '12 (Medfield, Mass./Medfield/Quinnipiac) combined for four points, as Buccellato tallied once, while Zuccarini scored twice and added one assist. Marty Vanzo '13 (Westford, Vt./Essex/Vermont) netted a hat trick, while Asa Sargent '13 (East Middlebury, Vt./Middlebury Union), Matt Casella '15 (Yonkers, N.Y./Fordham Prep) and Johnny Wadlinger '15 (Wolfeboro, N.H./Brewster Academy) each scored their first college goals. Peter Hanson '12 (Andover, Mass./Andover) scooped up eight ground balls, Chris Casserly '14 (Kensington, N.H./Exeter) was 9-of-11 on face-offs, and Chris DeMairo '14 (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) made seven saves in 31:16 as the first of four goalies. Andrew Landers '14 (Manchester, Mass./Proctor Academy) stopped three shots in 16:38, Dylan Florian '15 (West Hartford, Conn./Kingswood Oxford/Sacred Heart) was untested in 6:07, and Theo Ferguson '14 (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) made one save in 5:59.

Women's Lacrosse (3-10, 1-9 NE-10) Extends Run of Games Against Nationally-Ranked Foes to Five

The Saint Michael's College women's lacrosse team went 0-2 at home last week against Northeast-10 Conference opponents, extending its run versus nationally-ranked foes to five straight contests. The Purple Knights lost a 14-4 decision on Wednesday to No. 12 Merrimack College before falling to No. 6 University of New Haven, 17-4, on Sunday. Both are ranked by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA).

Eliza Scoba '12 (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) had one goal and one assist against Merrimack, while Caitlin Mahoney '13 (Cohasset, Mass./Cohasset), Claire Martin '14 (Mattapoisett, Mass./Bishop Stang) and Hannah Beardsley '15 (Essex, Mass./Manchester Essex Regional) each added one marker. Nicole Buckley '14 (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) scooped up five ground balls and caused two turnovers, and Sandy Palumbo '12 (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) made 16 saves and picked up five ground balls.

Scoba netted one marker against New Haven to give her 99 goals for her career, while Caroline Casper '14 (Franklin, Mass./Franklin), Kate Boyer '15 (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle) and Sarah Fortin '15 (Dover, N.H./Saint Thomas Aquinas) each tallied once, with Fortin's marker the first of her collegiate career. Martin caused two turnovers, had one assist and a game-high six draw controls, while Taylor Midgley '15 (Hampton, N.H./Saint Thomas Aquinas) scooped up four ground balls, caused three turnovers and added an assist for her first point as a collegian. Melissa Jaskiewicz '15 (Kensington, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) made five save in her first career appearance between the pipes.

Softball (6-32, 4-26 NE-10) Finishes Season with Four Doubleheaders in Six-Day Stretch, Upsets Le Moyne

The Saint Michael's College softball team went 1-7 last week against Northeast-10 Conference foes, including earning its first win against Le Moyne College since 2005. The Purple Knights were swept at Saint Anselm College on Tuesday, 9-2 and 5-1, before falling twice to visiting Southern New Hampshire University on Wednesday, 4-2 and 11-2 in five innings. They split with fourth-place Le Moyne on Friday, winning 1-0 before dropping a 6-0 decision, and lost a pair of five-inning games on Sunday to The College of Saint Rose, 10-2 and 9-1.

Sarah Murray '15 (Wallingford, Conn./Sheehan) went 2-for-3 with an RBI in game one against Saint Anselm, while Bethany Falls '14 (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) had a double and an RBI. Stephanie Frank '13 (Essex, Vt./Essex) took the loss despite yielding three earned runs in six innings. During game two, Grace Bonaiuto '14 (Beverly, Mass./Austin Preparatory School) was 2-for-2, and Falls drove in Amanda Brigante '14 (Colchester, Vt./Colchester).

Brigante was 2-for-3 during the opener against Southern New Hampshire, Murray doubled, and Brittany Cantore '13 (Saint Johnsbury, Vt./Saint Johnsbury Academy) drove in a run. Frank yielded four earned runs in a complete-game effort while striking out two. In the nightcap, Brigante and Carleen McLaughlin '13 (Branford, Conn./Branford) each ripped RBI singles, while Falls allowed one run in 2.2 innings in her first career start.

Frank spun a three-hit shutout in the first game against Le Moyne, yielding two singles among her three hits while not striking out or walking a single batter. Falls drove in the lone run, Bonaiuto added a sacrifice bunt, and Brigante contributed a hit and the run. The win was the Purple Knights' first over Le Moyne since the 2005 NE-10 Tournament, and their first regular-season or home victory over the Dolphins since April 11, 1999. During game two, Frank doubled but took the loss. Boniauto and Murray both singled, and Lauren Mercik '14 (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) yielded one run on one hit in four innings of relief.

In the first game with Saint Rose, Lindsay Houston '13 (Concord, N.H./Concord) went 1-for-1 with a run and a walk, Cantore ripped her third home run of the season, a two-run shot, and Olivia Leclerc '12 (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) added a hit. Houston went 1-for-1 with a hit-by-pitch in game two, Brigante singled and scored, and Leclerc had another hit. Bonaiuto picked up an RBI, while Frank suffered the loss.

 

 

Women's Tennis (13-8, 10-3 NE-10) Reaches 13th Consecutive NE-10 Semifinal, Falls to Top-Seeded Stonehill

 

The regionally-ranked Saint Michael's College women's tennis team went 1-1 last week, reaching its 13th consecutive Northeast-10 Conference Tournament semifinal. The fourth-seeded Purple Knights claimed a 5-0 victory over No. 5 Bentley University at home in the first round for the third straight season on Wednesday before dropping a 5-0 decision to top-seeded Stonehill College on Friday in a semifinal. The Purple Knights were ranked ninth in the latest NCAA East region poll and await word on a potential NCAA Tournament berth, while Stonehill was ranked sixth in the region.

 

A trio of duos earned doubles triumphs against Bentley, with pairings of Eileen Mullowney '12 (Burlington, Vt./Burlington)/Emily Magee '13 (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury), Alex Dalton '13 (South Easton, Mass/Oliver Ames)/Caroline Martin '15 (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) and Emily Ogilvy '12 (Bedford, N.H./Trinity)/Caroline Toutoungi '15 (Weston, Conn./Weston) all winning. Dalton and Magee claimed straight-set singles victories, while Jean-Marie McGrath '13 (Niwot, Colo./Alexander Dawson School) and Hannah Benoit '15 (Mystic, Conn./Saint Bernard School) were in the middle of matches when the victory was clinched.

Against Stonehill, all three doubles tandems lost, with Magee/Mullowney, Dalton/Martin and Ogilvy/Toutoungi siding at No. 1, 2 and 3, respectively. McGrath and Toutoungi lost in singles play, while Benoit, Dalton, Magee and Ogilvy all played at least one close set before being stopped mid-match due to Stonehill's clinching the victory. Magee was named to the NE-10 Tournament All-Tournament team.

Baseball (8-19, 5-13 NE-10) Receives Two Pitching Gems and Faces Nationally-Ranked NE-10 Foe

The Saint Michael's College baseball team went 2-3 last week while facing one nationally-ranked Northeast-10 Conference opponent and receiving two stellar complete-game pitching performances. The Purple Knights claimed a 9-1 victory at Saint Anselm College on Wednesday before traveling to No. 7 Southern New Hampshire University on Thursday and dropping an 8-1 decision. They finished the week by hosting Merrimack College for a three-game set over the weekend, claiming the opening game of a doubleheader on Saturday, 5-1, before dropping the nightcap, 8-2, and falling, 8-5, on Sunday. Southern New Hampshire's ranking was according to last week's National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) poll.

Austin Ziskie '12 (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) moved to 3-0 after not allowing an earned run during a complete-game effort against Saint Anselm, as he struck out three and walked two, yielding only four singles. Tyler Wild '14 (Quaker Hill, Conn./Saint Bernard School) was 2-for-4 with four RBIs and a triple, while Nicky Elderton '15 (Shelburne, Vt./Rice Memorial) doubled among his two hits. Bryan Geary '12 (Milton, Vt./Milton/Skidmore) added two hits and Chadwick Estey '12 (New Haven, Vt./Mount Abraham Union) scored twice and drove in two.

At Southern New Hampshire, Chris Puliafico '14 (Sharon, Mass./Sharon) smacked a pinch-hit double, while Geary and Jason Moore '14 (Avon, Conn./Northwest Catholic) also had hits. Andrew DuPrat '13 (Fairfax, Vt./BFA-Fairfax) took the loss, but Jesse Sullivan '12 (Saugus, Mass./Pingree School) and Nick Myers '14 (Canton, Conn./The Master's School) combined for four one-hit innings of shutout relief. Myers fanned four while tossing the fifth and sixth before Sullivan struck out three during the seventh and eighth.

In the nightcap, Andrew Kelley '13 (Lincoln, N.H./Lin-Wood) carried a three-hit shutout into the seventh inning and finished by allowing four runs on five hits over 6.1 innings. Corey Livingston '14 (Hartford, Conn./East Catholic) was 2-for-4, while Alec Tice '14 (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) hit his third home run of the season.

In the final game against Merrimack, Estey went 2-for-3 with two runs, which put him within three hits of 100 for his career. Eight different Purple Knights had single hits, with Livingston and Don McGuirl '15 (Warwick, R.I./Saint Sebastian's School) among them while adding a run and an RBI apiece. Collin Fishman '13 (Bethesda, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) allowed five earned runs in 5.1 innings while striking out three.

No. 11 Men's Lacrosse (8-4, 4-4 NE-10) Snaps Three-Game Skid, Buccellato and Donnally Reach 100 Points

The nationally-ranked Saint Michael's College men's lacrosse team went 2-0 at home last week in Northeast-10 Conference action, snapping a three-game skid and seeing two players reach 100 career points. The Purple Knights claimed a 14-8 triumph over Franklin Pierce University on Wednesday before knocking off Pace University, 7-5, on Saturday. The Purple Knights were the 11th-ranked team in the latest United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) national poll.

Chris Casserly '14 (Kensington, N.H./Exeter) had five ground balls and was 11-of-14 on face-offs, and Chris DeMairo '14 (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) made seven saves.

Against Pace, Donnally tallied two markers, including the winner with 4:14 remaining, while Vanzo and Cooper Quenneville '14 (Shoreham, Vt./Gould Academy) each had one goal and one assist. Tyler Violette '12 (Amherst, N.H./Proctor Academy) had six ground balls and caused four turnovers, while Casserly was 6-of-10 on face-offs. Neil Kelly '13 (Narragansett, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) and Sean Smith '14 (West Islip, N.Y./Saint John the Baptist Diocesan) each tallied their first career assist, while DeMairo made 11 saves, including five in the fourth quarter.

Women's Lacrosse (3-8, 1-7 NE-10) Faces Two Nationally-Ranked Conference Opponents

The Saint Michael's College women's lacrosse team went 0-2 on the road last week against nationally-ranked Northeast-10 Conference foes, facing their fourth and fifth nationally-ranked opponents of the season. The Purple Knights lost a 15-6 decision on Tuesday to No. 13 Saint Anselm College before falling to No. 2 Adelphi University, 20-2, on Saturday. Saint Anselm is the 13th-ranked team in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) national poll, while Adelphi is the second-ranked team.

Eliza Scoba '12 (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) tallied twice against Saint Anselm, while Melissa Jaskiewicz '15 (Kensington, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) scored and controlled five draws. Caitlin Mahoney '13 (Cohasset, Mass./Cohasset) scored once while recording three ground balls and two draw controls, while Hannah Beardsley '15 (Essex, Mass./Manchester Essex Regional) and Kate Boyer '15 (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle) each netted one marker. Sandy Palumbo '12 (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) made 11 saves.

Scoba netted her 97th career goal against Adelphi, while Shannon Murphy '14 (Boxboro, Mass./Boxboro Regional/UMass) scored her first collegiate goal. Palumbo stopped 15 shots, surpassing the 500-save mark for her career, and Jaskiewicz controlled a game-high four draws. With her tally, Scoba increased her career point total to 131, bringing her within two points of Megan Lagasse '07 for eighth in program history. 

Softball (5-25, 3-19 NE-10) Plays Four Doubleheaders in a Seven-Day Stretch

The Saint Michael's College softball team went 0-8 last week against Northeast-10 Conference opponents, playing eight games in just seven days. The Purple Knights hosted Assumption College on Monday for a twinbill, falling 7-3 in the opener and 12-8 in the nightcap, before dropping two close games at Bentley University on Wednesday, 3-0 and 2-1. They traveled to Pace University for a doubleheader on Saturday, when they slipped 3-0 and 9-1 in five innings, before losing to Adelphi University, 3-0 and 8-3, on Sunday.

Lindsay Houston '13 (Concord, N.H./Concord) went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two doubles in the opening contest against Assumption, while Sarah Murray '15 (Wallingford, Conn./Sheehan) was 2-for-3 with a run and a double. Lauren Mercik '14 (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) yielded one run in 2.1 innings of relief. In the nightcap, Stephanie Frank '13 (Essex, Vt./Essex) went 3-for-4 with two runs and five RBIs, missing the cycle by a triple and fanned four in the circle. Murray scored three times, Bethany Falls '14 (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) had two hits and two runs, and Mercik tossed a shutout inning of relief.

Frank held Bentley off the board until the third inning in the opener, finishing with a six-hitter while striking out two. Houston, Amanda Brigante '14 (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) and Greer Lemnah '14 (Lyndon Center, Vt./Lyndon Institute) each had hits. In game two, Brittany Cantore's '13 (Saint Johnsbury, Vt./Saint Johnsbury Academy) seventh-inning RBI double knotted the contest before Bentley walked off with the win. Falls was 2-for-3, while Houston singled and scored. Laura McCormack '14 (Natick, Mass./Natick) allowed one earned run on three hits in 6.1 innings, striking out two and walking a pair.

Against Pace, Falls went 2-for-3 in game one, while Frank yielded two earned runs on five hits and struck out three. During the second contest, Cantore homered, while Murray and Carleen McLaughlin '13 (Branford, Conn./Branford) also picked up hits.

During the doubleheader with Adelphi, Lemnah singled in game one, and Frank stole a base and allowed two earned runs in six innings. In the nightcap, Houston was 2-for-2 with a walk, while Frank had a hit and a base on balls. Falls allowed one run in 4.1 innings of relief.

 

 

Men's Tennis (6-6, 5-6 NE-10) Falls Short of NE-10 Tournament, Seniors Help Claim Victory on Senior Day

               

The regionally-ranked Saint Michael's College men's tennis team went 1-2 last week in Northeast-10 Conference action, falling short of an NE-10 Tournament bid on the final day of the regular season. The Purple Knights fell at regionally-ranked Southern New Hampshire University, 9-0, on Tuesday, before hosting American International College (AIC) on Thursday and claiming a 7-2 victory. They faced Le Moyne College on Saturday and needed a win to qualify for the NE-10 Tournament but dropped an 8-1 decision. The Purple Knights were ranked ninth in the East region by the NCAA, while Southern New Hampshire is ranked sixth.

 

Against Southern New Hampshire, Nick Bosco '14 (Glastonbury, Conn./East Catholic) played a pair of close sets during an eventual setback at No. 1 singles to the 17th-ranked player in the East region according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). Kenny Vassallo '13 (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) and Billy Wood '15 (Wayne, Pa./Home Schooled) both finished strong with 6-4 second-set defeats in singles losses.

 

Sam Cieplicki '12 (South Burlington, Vt./New Hampton School) and Brian Healey '12 (Ware, Mass./Belchertown) combined to play a role in three victories on Senior Day against AIC. Healey and Vassallo teamed up to claim a victory at No. 2 doubles. Cieplicki earned the fifth and clinching point at No. 3 singles, while Healey won his match in the fourth slot. Eric Parziale '13 (Pinehurst, N.C./Pinecrest) triumphed at No. 2.

 

In the pivotal match against Le Moyne, Bosco claimed the lone point, as he fought through a 6-7, 6-4, 10-3 triumph at No. 1 singles. At No. 2, Parziale dropped a three-set decision, one of three singles losses by the Purple Knights that included at least one narrow 6-4 score during a set defeat.

 

 

Women's Tennis (12-7, 10-3 NE-10) Wins Two of Three, Clinches Fourth Seed in NE-10 Tournament

 

The regionally-ranked Saint Michael's College women's tennis team went 2-1 at home last week, dropping just two points during the victories and falling to two-time defending Northeast-10 Conference champion Southern New Hampshire University for the loss. The Purple Knights defeated NE-10 foe Assumption College, 8-1, on Tuesday before dropping a 9-0 decision to nationally-ranked Southern New Hampshire on Friday. They finished the regular season with an 8-1 victory over non-conference opponent Salve Regina University on Sunday. The Purple Knights were ranked ninth in the latest NCAA East region poll, while Southern New Hampshire was ranked fifth regionally by the NCAA and 45th nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).

 

For the third straight season, Saint Michael's will hold the No. 4 seed in the NE-10 Tournament and host No. 5 Bentley University for a quarterfinal match. The teams play on Wednesday at 2 p.m., with the semifinal and final rounds occurring over the weekend. Saint Michael's aims for its first NE-10 Tournament title.

A trio of duos earned doubles triumphs against Assumption, with the pairings of Eileen Mullowney '12 (Burlington, Vt./Burlington)/Emily Magee '13 (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury), Jean-Marie McGrath '13 (Niwot, Colo./Alexander Dawson School)/ Caroline Martin '15 (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) and Emily Ogilvy '12 (Bedford, N.H./Trinity)/Caroline Toutoungi '15 (Weston, Conn./Weston) all winning. Martin, McGrath, Ogilvy, Alex Dalton '13 (South Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) and Hannah Benoit '15 (Mystic, Conn./Saint Bernard School) won in singles. Martin grinded out a three-set win, while the other four won in straight sets.

Against Southern New Hampshire, Dalton took the 18th-ranked singles player in the region to a tie-breaker in the first set before ultimately falling in the second singles slot. Ogilvy took five points during a pro-set loss at No. 6, while Magee took two games from the fourth-ranked player in the ITA's East poll.

Mullowney and Ogilvy sided in doubles for the first time in their careers against Salve Regina on Senior Day, winning at No. 2. Dalton and Martin claimed a victory at the top spot, while Kayla Dowd '15 (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) and Michelle Moreau '15 (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) joined in the third position to post the third doubles win. The Purple Knights nabbed five of six singles matches, with Benoit, Dalton, Magee, Ogilvy and Caroline Toutoungi '15 (Weston, Conn./Weston) victorious.
