Men’s Basketball
(9-14, 8-11 NE-10) Picks up Two 66-64 Northeast-10 Wins with Last-Second Shots
The Saint Michael’s College men’s
basketball team went 2-0 last week, winning Northeast-10 Conference match-ups against
two of the top five teams in the league by identical 66-64 scores, hitting the
winning bucket in the final seconds of each game. The Purple Knights defeated
Bentley University on Wednesday at home and then won at Stonehill College on
Saturday.
Senior Tyler Schilling (Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka) had the winning tip-in with eight seconds left against
Bentley, which has been to the last seven NCAA Tournaments. Sophomore Mike Holton Jr.
(Portland, Ore./The Winchendon School) led the Purple Knights with 24
points, going 7-for-10 on free throws, while junior Travis Warech (Pine Brook, N.J./Montville) buried a trio of
three-pointers en route to scoring 10
points. Schilling finished with eight points, while freshman Corey Crawford (Dover, Del./The Phelps
School) notched seven points, six rebounds and four assists.
At Stonehill, Holton snapped a tie with
fewer than two seconds left with a jumper to give the Purple Knights their
second consecutive victory. Schilling provided 12 points and 10 rebounds, which
moved him into seventh in program history in career rebounds (865). Holton and freshman
Dom Ditlefsen (Portland, Ore./Sunset) each
added 11 points, while Crawford had 10 points, seven rebounds and six assists.
Warech notched 10 points, seven rebounds and three assists, bringing him within
14 points of 1,000 for his career.
Women’s
Basketball (10-13, 7-12 NE-10) Falls to Two Northeast-10 Opponents
The Saint Michael’s College women’s
basketball team went 0-2 last week in Northeast-10 Conference play, including
having a rally fall short against nationally-ranked Bentley University. The Purple
Knights fell to the visiting No. 7 Falcons, 69-58, on Wednesday before dropping
an 84-56 decision at Stonehill College on Saturday.
Junior Nicole Adach (Schenectady, N.Y./Mohonasen) netted a career-high 25 points
against Bentley, shooting 9-of-17 from the floor and 7-of-8 on free throws.
Senior Coreen Hennessy (Chatham,
N.H./Fryeburg Academy) and sophomore Cara
Deroy (Hamden, Conn./Hamden) each contributed 10 points. Junior Megan Olsen (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem
Central) notched five steals, and senior Samantha Steinmetz (Washington, Conn./Shepaug Valley) rejected
three shots during a game where the Purple Knights were 13-of-14 from the
charity stripe and forced 25 turnovers.
Sophomore Alexa Long (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) shot 6-of-10, finishing
with 16 points and nine rebounds, at Stonehill. Adach had 14 points, six boards
and three steals, while freshman Natalie
Wimett (South Burlington, Vt./South Burlington) buried a pair of
three-pointers in seven minutes off the bench.
Men’s Ice Hockey
(6-14-2, 3-12-1 ECAC East, 2-1-1 NE-10) Drops Two Road ECAC East Contests
The Saint Michael’s College men’s ice
hockey team went 0-2 last week, slipping twice in Eastern College Athletic
Conference (ECAC) East road match-ups. The Purple Knights fell at No. 7
Castleton State College, 3-0, on Friday and at Skidmore College, 9-1, on
Saturday.
Against nationally-ranked Castleton
State, junior Mike Dizgun (Kirkland, Quebec/OCN Blizzard) stopped 32
shots, including 23 in the final two periods, and did not yield an
even-strength marker. At Skidmore, junior Connor
Logan (Shelburne, Vt./Green Mountain Glades) tallied the lone goal for the
Purple Knights. Dizgun stopped nine shots, while junior Eric McGuirk (Rehoboth, Mass./Bridgewater Bandits) made 17 saves in
relief. Juniors Tim McAuliffe (North
Reading, Mass./Vermont Academy) and Rich
Rodeschini (Katonah, N.Y./Canterbury School) each earned an assist.
Women’s Ice
Hockey (3-18-1, 2-13-1 ECAC East) Falls in Overtime During Two-Game Weekend Set
The Saint Michel’s College women’s ice
hockey team went 0-2 last week in a home weekend series against Lindenwood (Mo.)
University, which will be competing in a Division I conference next winter. The
Purple Knights dropped a 6-5 overtime decision on Friday and then fell 9-1 on
Saturday. Along the way, junior Erin
Stevens (Watertown, Conn./Connecticut Polar Bears) broke the school record
for season saves. She now has 741.
On Friday, the Purple Knights battled
back from three two-goal deficits and took a lead with 2:28 to go in the final
stanza before losing with 26 seconds remaining in the extra session. Senior Madelena
Santore (Millington, N.J./New Jersey Rockets) and freshmen Shannon Rice
(West River, Md./Navy U19) and Fernanda Saavedra (Miami, Fla./Pittsburgh
Penguins Elite) notched a goal and an assist apiece, while Stevens made 41 saves. Senior Casey
Yelton (Arnold, Md./Washington Pride) and junior Melissa Coughlin
(Franklin, Mass./Franklin) also scored, with Coughlin netting her first
career marker, and sophomore Olivia Collins (South Boston, Mass./Boston
Shamrocks) provided two assists.
During the second game of the weekend
series, Stevens made 44 stops and broke Melanie
Cullen's '09 program mark of 736 saves, set during the 2007-08 season. Sophomore Courtney Burnett (Deep River, Ontario/Northwood School) recorded her
first career goal.
Skiing Takes
10th at Dartmouth Carnival, Sandell Posts Pair of Top-15 Finishes
The Saint Michael's College skiing teams
finished the two-day Dartmouth College Carnival on Saturday by taking 10th
place out of 15 teams. The Purple Knights totaled 290 points, coming within 50
of ninth-place Harvard University.
Freshman Fredrik Sandell (Oslo, Norway/Donski Alpine) took ninth among 75 varsity
collegiate skiers in the men's giant slalom on Friday, due in part to the
second-best second-run time in the competition (54.16). On Saturday, Sandell
took 15th out of 74 in the slalom, finishing 0.27 seconds out of the top 10.
Sophomore Carl-Oscar Bredengen (Reistad,
Norway/Donski Alpine) scored both days, finishing 29th in the slalom.
Junior Gabbi
Hall (San Anselmo, Calif./Forest Charter School) posted an 18th-place
finish among 70 competitors in the women's giant slalom, edging out classmate Christina
Billotti (Massapequa, N.Y./Green Mountain Valley School) by less than a
second. Billotti finished 25th. Hall once again paced the Purple Knights on
Saturday by finishing 28th out of 68 in the slalom. Sophomore Kerstin
Middleton (Greenland, N.H./Proctor Academy) also scored points both
days.
Junior Colin
Delaney (Lake Placid, N.Y./National Sports Academy) paced the Nordic men's
team in 10k freestyle on Friday, while senior Robert Sitzer (Lenox,
Mass./Lenox Memorial) led the Purple Knights in the 20k classic mass start on
Saturday. Sitzer was second for his squad in the 10K freestyle, and Delaney
crossed second in the 20k classic. Sophomore Gabrielle Naranja (Fort Kent,
Maine/Fort Kent Community) was the top Saint Michael's finisher for the
women in the 5k freestyle and the 15k classic mass start, followed by freshman Chloe
Boutelle (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) in both.
