This Week in Saint Michael's College Athletics ‒ November 28- December 4

Men's Basketball (3-5, 3-2 NE-10) Splits Pair of Conference Games

The Saint Michael's College men's basketball team went 1-1 in Northeast-10 Conference play last week, defeating Bentley University on Wednesday, 67-59, before falling to Stonehill College, 75-53, on Saturday. Bentley was receiving votes toward the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) national poll.

At Bentley, freshman James Cambronne (De Bary, Fla./The Winchendon School) scored a career-high 13 points in addition to snagging four rebounds, and junior Travis Warech (Pine Brook, N.J./Montville) netted 13 points and hauled in six rebounds. Sophomore Mike Holton Jr. (Portland, Ore./The Winchendon School) added 12 points, eight rebounds and four assists, and senior Tyler Schilling (Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka) notched eight points and eight boards.

Versus visiting Stonehill, freshman Corey Crawford (Dover, Del./The Phelps School) notched a season-high 13 points, hitting a pair of three-pointers while dishing out two assists. Senior Tom Ward (Brighton, East Sussex, England/Saint Francis [N.Y.]) totaled 12 points and five rebounds, Schilling had nine rebounds, and Cambronne notched nine points off the bench.


Women's Basketball (4-5, 1-4 NE-10) Drops Two Close NE-10 Decisions

The Saint Michael's College women's basketball team fell twice last week during Northeast-10 Conference action, slipping at top-ranked Bentley University, 75-66, on Wednesday before narrowly falling to Stonehill College, 58-53, on Saturday. Bentley was ranked No. 1 in last week's USA Today ESPN national poll.

Against Bentley, sophomore Alexa Long (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) tallied a career-high 20 points and also added six rebounds and posted three blocks. Senior Coreen Hennessy (Chatham, N.H./Fryeburg Academy) notched 13 points and three assists, and sophomore Cara Deroy (Hamden, Conn./Hamden) had nine points. Junior Megan Olsen (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) totaled eight points, and classmate Nicole Adach (Schenectady, N.Y./Mohonasen) contributed seven points, seven rebounds, and three assists.

Versus visiting Stonehill, Hennessy notched a game-high 18 points, shooting 5-of-8 from the field and 6-of-7 on free throws. Adach added 15 points and seven rebounds, and Long had nine rebounds.



Men's Ice Hockey (1-6-1, 1-4-1 ECAC East, 0-1-1 NE-10) Goes 0-2 Over Weekend

The Saint Michael's College men's ice hockey team went 0-2 over the weekend while hosting a pair of Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East contests, falling to Skidmore College, 7-3, on Friday before slipping to No. 3 Castleton State College, 5-2, on Saturday. Castleton State was ranked third in last week's U.S. College Hockey Online (USCHO) Division III national poll.

Against Skidmore, junior captain Josh Geary (Wellesley, Mass./Phillips Andover Academy), sophomore Ryan Arsenault (Reading, Mass./New Hampton School) and freshman A.J. Pieprzak (Barrie, Ontario/Ridley College) each tallied. Junior Mike Dizgun (Kirkland, Quebec/OCN Blizzard) made 19 saves in a pair of periods, while classmate Eric McGuirk (Rehoboth, Mass./Bridgewater Bandits) had 10 stops in the third period while picking up an assist.

Versus Castleton State, Dizgun made a career-high-tying 44 saves, posting 15 saves in the first period and 23 in second. Junior Dan Evarts (Hinesburg, Vt./Green Mountain Glades) and Pieprzak each netted a goal.


Women's Ice Hockey (0-7-1, 0-7-1 ECAC East) Falls Twice in Conference Contests

The Saint Michael's College women's ice hockey team went 0-2 last weekend during road Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East competition, slipping to Salve Regina University, 6-3, on Friday before falling to previously undefeated College of the Holy Cross, 8-0, on Saturday.

Against Salve Regina, freshman Kristen Spulecki (Orchard Park, N.Y./Buffalo Bison) notched two goals and an assist, while senior Kelly McDonald (South Burlington, Vt./South Burlington) had a goal and a helper. Junior Erin Stevens (Watertown, Conn./Connecticut Polar Bears) made 30 saves in 47:38, while sophomore Meaghan Leong (Cohasset, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) had three stops in her college debut.

Against Holy Cross, Leong made her first collegiate start, stopping 17 shots before Stevens stepped in to make 14 saves.


Men's (1-3) and Women's (3-1) Swimming & Diving Post 17 Top-Five Finishes at NE-10 Invitational

The Saint Michael's College men's and women's swimming & diving teams competed among five league schools during the Northeast-10 Conference Invitational at Bentley on Sunday, with the women placing fourth and the men taking fifth. The teams combined for 17 top-five finishes.

Senior Eileen Mullowney (Burlington, Vt./Burlington) beat 33 competitors in the 50-yard freestyle and was second in the 100 and 200 free races. Her sister, sophomore Julie Mullowney (Burlington, Vt./Burlington), neared three breaststroke school records. In a third-place finish in the 200 breast, Julie Mullowney posted a time of 2:36.53, just 0.78 seconds short of the 18-year-old mark. She was fifth in the 100 breast in 1:10.37, 1.30 ticks off the 18-year-old standard, and her 50-yard split of 33.27 left her 1.10 seconds off a record she matched last year that was originally set in 1993-94.

Both Mullowneys swam for fifth-place 200- and 400-yard medley relay quartets, joining seniors Kaytlyn Kelley (Jefferson, Mass./Wachusett Regional) and Sammy Sweeney (Waterbury Center, Vt./Harwood Union/Franklin & Marshall). Sweeney was also fourth in the 200-yard butterfly. For the fifth-place 400 free relay team, sophomores Emily Dieter (Saint Charles, Ill./Saint Charles North) and Grace Kahn (Fairhope, Ala./Bayside Academy) and freshmen Kim Brady (Morris Township, N.J./Academy of Saint Elizabeth) and Charlotte Murray (Hamden, Conn./Hamden) each swam legs. Brady, Murray and freshmen Kathleen Lamontagne (Manchester, N.H./Trinity) and Steph Nadow (Charlton, Mass./Saint Peter-Marian) sided on the fifth-place 200 free relay.

For the men, freshman Matt Annenberg (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) placed second in the one-meter event and third in his first collegiate three-meter competition. Sophomore Zach Scahill (Manville, R.I./Lincoln) was fifth in the one-meter dive.

Senior Dan Healy (South Burlington, Vt./South Burlington) was second in the 100 back, while he joined sophomore Jack Mulderrig (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) and freshmen Aidan Meehan (Levittown, N.Y./Island Trees) and Nate Paluso (Windham, Maine/Windham) on the fifth-place 200 medley relay quartet. Paluso was fourth in the 200 breast. Senior Chris Jones (Santa Fe, N.M./Saint Michael's), juniors Kyle Esposito (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) and Andrew Marshall (Kittery, Maine/Saint Thomas Aquinas/Saint Joseph's [Maine]), and freshman Matt Pearson (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk) combined on a fifth-place finish in the 200 free relay.
