This Week in Saint Michael's College Athletics ‒ September 19-25

Field Hockey (2-8, 1-1) Tallies First Two Wins of the Season in 2-1 Week

The Saint Michael's College field hockey team went 2-1 last week, tallying its first win of the season over Saint Anselm College, 2-1, at home on Tuesday in Northeast-10 Conference play before beating Franklin Pierce University, 3-2, on Thursday and falling to Stonehill College, 2-1, in overtime on Saturday.

Against Saint Anselm, freshman Cassaundra Davis (Newburyport, Mass./Newburyport) tallied a goal and an assist, while junior Laken Ferreira (Holliston, Mass./Holliston) netted her first goal of the season, scoring the winner in the 56th minute. Senior goalkeeper Jackie Stacey (West Windsor, Vt./Woodstock Union) recorded one save.

At Franklin Pierce, Davis became the first Saint Michael's freshman to tally a hat trick since 1998, capping the performance with two goals in the final 13:41 to erase a 2-1 deficit. Stacey made 10 saves, while freshman Hannah Beardsley (Essex, Mass./Manchester Essex Regional) made a critical defensive save.

The Purple Knights held visiting Stonehill, a 2010 NCAA Final Four qualifier, to just one goal in regulation before falling 2-1 in overtime. Beardsley scored her first collegiate tally to tie the game in the 52nd minute, while freshman Jackie Chisholm (New Braintree, Mass./Quabbin Regional) made her first collegiate start and stopped four saves. Classmate Sarah Healey (Canton, Mass./Canton) made six saves during the second half and overtime. Chisholm became the first Saint Michael's freshman goalkeeper to start a game since 1995.


Men's Golf Takes Part in Two Meets, Wins Johnson State Invitational

The Saint Michael's College men's golf team competed at two meets last week, finishing second out of five teams at the Vermont Intercollegiate Championship on Wednesday before winning the three-school Johnson State Invitational on Saturday.

During the state meet, the Purple Knights saw their bid at a three-peat fall seven strokes short. In his second year of college play, junior George Flanagan (Andover, Mass./Andover) broke 80 for the first time, firing a 78 to tie for third overall. Classmate Dylan Lavallee (Colchester, Vt./Rice Memorial) and sophomore Steve French (Goffstown, N.H./Goffstown Area) both carded an 80.

Flanagan and junior Nicholas Angelo (Sutton, Mass./Saint John's) both earned medalist honors at the Johnson State meet, each firing a tournament-low 76. French shot a 78 to tie for third overall.


Men's Soccer (3-3-2, 1-2-1) Suffer Two Home Losses During NE-10 Action

The Saint Michael's College men's soccer team went 0-2 in Northeast-10 Conference play last week, falling 4-1 on Wednesday against Bentley University before slipping to Southern Connecticut State University, 1-0, on Saturday. Bentley had been regionally ranked as recently as the week prior, while the Owls advanced to last year's NCAA Tournament Sweet 16.

Against Bentley, sophomore Anthony Stanley (La Ceiba, Honduras/Saint Johnsbury Academy) tallied his fourth goal of the season, and junior goalkeeper Logan Kingman (New Bern, N.C./New Bern) made two saves. On Saturday, the Purple Knights held Southern Connecticut State to just an eighth-minute goal in the loss. Kingman made seven saves.


Women's Soccer (3-5, 2-4) Splits Pair of Conference Contests

The Saint Michael's College women's soccer team went 1-1 last week during Northeast-10 Conference play, recording a 4-1 loss at 17th-ranked Merrimack College on Tuesday before defeating visiting Pace University, 2-0, on Saturday.

The Purple Knights stood tied with Merrimack late in the first half, as junior Cassie Crockett (Gilmanton, N.H./Gilford) tied the game in the 17th minute before the hosts scored three straight goals. Senior keeper Ashleigh Adams (Milton, Vt./Milton) recorded three saves in 80:25 before classmate Mary Farnsworth (Morrisonville, N.Y./Saranac Central) went untested during the remainder of the contest. It was Farnsworth's first appearance since the 2008 season.

Against Pace, Crockett and senior Kristin Hagenbarth (Killington, Vt./Woodstock Union/Vermont) scored 4:14 apart early in the second half, while senior Brittany Cocozza (East Greenwich, R.I./East Greenwich/Saint John's [N.Y.]) made five saves, all in the second stanza.


Men's Tennis (2-0, 1-0) Win NE-10 Opener, 6-3, Over Pace

The Saint Michael's College men's tennis team started its Northeast-10 Conference season with a 6-3 victory over visiting Pace University on Sunday. Junior Chris Moskal (Springfield, Mass./Cathedral) and sophomore Tom Brahm (Marlborough, Conn./Xavier) were victorious at No. 2 doubles for the hosts, who also won by default in the third position. Three additional Purple Knights triumphed during singles play to clinch the team victory, while Saint Michael's also won by default at No. 6. Senior Sam Cieplicki (South Burlington, Vt./New Hampton School) fought through a 7-5, 7-5 triumph in the second slot, junior Eric Parziale (Pinehurst, N.C./Pinecrest/Trinity [Conn.]) made his season debut with a straight-set win at three, and senior Brian Healey (Ware, Mass./Belchertown) followed suit at four.


Women's Tennis (2-1, 2-0) Notches Second Victory, Remains Perfect in NE-10

The Saint Michael's College women's tennis team won its only match last week, defeating visiting Pace University, 7-2, on Sunday in a Northeast-10 Conference match. In doubles, the tandems of freshmen Hannah Benoit (Mystic, Conn./Saint Bernard School)/Caroline Martin (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) and senior Eileen Mullowney (Burlington, Vt./Burlington)/freshman Michelle Moreau (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) won at No. 2 and 3, respectively. During singles action, Freshman Caroline Toutoungi (Weston, Conn./Weston), Ogilvy, Benoit, Mullowney and freshman Kayla Dowd (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) captured victories in the second through sixth positions, respectively, each winning in straight sets.

Women's Volleyball (11-4, 0-1) Runs Winning Streak to 11 Matches, Splits Pair of Matches

The Saint Michael's College women's volleyball team went 1-1 at home last week, first winning 3-2 against Southern New Hampshire University on Tuesday to extend its winning streak to a program-record-tying 11 matches, last reached in 1994. The Purple Knights slipped against Stonehill College, 3-0, on Saturday.

Against Southern New Hampshire, juniors Tracy Peterka (Newport Beach, Calif./Mater Dei) and Katie Walsh (North Kingstown, R.I./The Prout School) each tallied career highs in kills while notching double-doubles. Peterka had 21 kills and 11 digs, while Walsh totaled 18 kills and 14 digs. Sophomore Chelsey Covitz (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) tacked on nine kills. Classmate Jess McLeod (Medfield, Mass./Medfield) dished out a career-best 54 assists, while junior Courtney Dunne (Hopkinton, Mass./Bancroft School) and sophomore Lindsay Phenix (Tewksbury, Mass./Central Catholic) contributed 19 and 12 digs, respectively.

Against Stonehill, Peterka dropped 10 kills, while Covitz notched seven kills and five blocks. Walsh had six kills and 11 digs, and McLeod dished off 27 assists.
