Splits Double Header in Florida to Start Season
The Saint Michael’s College baseball
team went 1-1 last week during the Palm Beach Challenge, as the Purple Knights
start their season with a week-long trip to Florida. The Purple Knights played
Concordia (N.Y.) College twice on Sunday, picking up a 10-8 victory in the
initial game and then dropping a 13-4 decision.
Andrew
Kelley '13 (Lincoln, N.H./Lin-Wood) earned the win in game one, yielding
three earned runs on three hits with five strikeouts in four innings. Chris Hoey '12 (Huntington, N.Y./Saint
Anthony's) pitched 1.2 shutout innings of relief before Corey Livingston '14 (Hartford, Conn./East
Catholic) tossed a no-hit seventh inning for his first career save. The
victory was the first of interim head coach Matt Rodovick's career. Eight Purple Knights picked up hits, with George
Buteau '15 (South Burlington, Vt./Trinity-Pawling School) and Don
McGuirl '15 (Warwick, R.I./Saint Sebastian's School) notching two hits and
RBIs apiece. Alec Tice '14 (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) added two
knocks, while Nick Nelson '14 (Spofford, N.H./Keene) and Tyler Wild '14
(Quaker Hill, Conn./Saint Bernard School) had a pair of RBIs each, and Chris Puliafico '14 (Sharon, Mass./Sharon)
scored two runs.
During the second game of the double
header, Jesse Sullivan '12 (Saugus,
Mass./Pingree School) yielded one earned run in five innings, while
striking out one and not walking anyone. Michael
Robinson '12 (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Warde) went 2-for-2 with a double
and an RBI off the bench.
Men's Lacrosse
(1-1, 0-1 NE-10) Opens Season with Victory, Drops First NE-10 Contest
The Saint Michael’s College men's
lacrosse team went 1-1 last week, picking up its first win under head coach Brian Kingsbury in the season opener.
The Purple Knights defeated Mercy (N.Y.) College, 9-5, at home on Tuesday and then
fell at Saint Anselm College, 6-5, on Friday in their first Northeast-10
Conference match-up of the year.
Pete
Donnally '14 (Madison, N.J./Morristown-Beard School) led the Purple
Knights against Mercy with a career-high six goals. Marty Vanzo '14 (Westford, Vt./Essex/Vermont) tallied one goal and
one assist, while Connor Glackin '15
(South Huntington, N.Y./Saint Anthony's) and Tim McDonald '14 (Walpole, Mass./Walpol) each found the back of the
net. The marker was McDonald's first as a collegian. Kevin Hunt '12 (Johnstown, N.Y./Johnstown) and Max Zuccarini (Medfield, Mass./Medfield/Quinnipiac) contributed two
helpers apiece, while Chris DeMairo '14
(Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) made seven saves. Peter Hanson '12 (Andover, Mass./Andover) and Evan White (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) caused four
turnovers and scooped up 10 ground ball respectively.
During the contest at Saint Anselm
Donnally scored twice for the Purple Knights, while Hunt added a goal and an
assist. Vanzo and Glackin each netted one marker, DeMairo had 13 stops and
White scooped up six ground balls.
Women's Lacrosse
(0-1) Falls in Overtime during Season Opening Contest
The Saint Michael’s College women's
lacrosse team opened its season for the third consecutive year with a contest
against Division III NCAA Tournament qualifier Keene State College. The Purple
Knights hosted Keene State on Thursday and fell 10-9 in overtime after erasing
a four-goal, second-half deficit.
Eliza
Scoba '12(Franklin, Mass./Franklin) led the Purple Knights with three
goals, while Crystal '14 King (South Burlington, Vt./South Burlington)
tallied two markers and added one assist. Beth Cusimano '14 (Essex Junction,
Vt./Essex) finished with one goal, while Hannah Beardsley '15(Essex,
Mass./Manchester Essex Regional), Melissa Jaskiewicz '15 (Kensington,
Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) and Courtney Piper '15 (Wolfeboro,
N.H./Brewster Academy) all tallied their first collegiate goals to finish
off the scoring. Sandy Palumbo '12 (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) finished with
15 saves and six ground balls, and Caroline Casper '14 (Norfolk,
Mass./Thayer Academy) dished off two assists.
Sandell Ties Two
Freshman Skiing Records, Helps Purple Knights Finish 19th at NCAA Championship
The Saint Michael's College skiing teams
finished the two-day NCAA Championship on Saturday, by taking 19th place out of
21 teams. Fredrik Sandell '15 (Oslo,
Norway/Donski Alpine), the only Purple Knight to participate, tied two freshman records and
single-handedly delivered the school its best performance since 2000. The
Purple and Gold finished with 33 points, while the University of Vermont won with
832 points.
Sandell had the best giant slalom
placement for a Saint Michael's men's alpine skier at the NCAA Championship
since 2000 on Thursday, grabbing 26th at the Bridger Bowl to match the best
finish ever turned in a by a male Purple Knight first-year. Sandell posted a
two-run showing of 1:34.71 in a field of 35 racers, just one second out of the
top 12 and his second-run time of 46.52 seconds was the 11th-best finish. During
the second day, Sandell tied the program's record for a first-year by taking
21st during the men's slalom, in a time of 1:53.47. Sandell was ninth among the
18 skiers from Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association (EISA) schools.
