This Week in Saint Michael’s College Athletics ‒ March 19-25

Baseball (4-9, 1-3 NE-10) Earns First NE-10 Win in 14 Years and First Conference Shutout Since 1993

The Saint Michael's College baseball team went 1-3 last week while playing in its first Northeast-10 Conference games in 14 years. The Purple Knights fell at nationally-ranked Southern Connecticut University, 9-2 and 7-4, on Saturday before claiming a 1-0 victory at the University of New Haven on Sunday in the first contest and then dropping the nightcap, 6-2.

Andrew Kelley '13 (Lincoln, N.H./Lin-Wood) yielded three earned runs in five frames while striking out two during the first contest against Southern Connecticut State, which was ranked as high as seventh in one national poll. Jacob Begnoche '13 (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) went 2-for-4 with a walk, while Chris Puliafico '14 (Sharon, Mass./Sharon) had a hit, an RBI and a walk. Don McGuirl '15 (Warwick, R.I./Saint Sebastian's School) drove in a run, and Nicky Elderton '15 (Shelburne, Vt./Rice Memorial) doubled. In game two, Collin Fishman '13 (Bethesda, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) struck out four and allowed just two hits in 3.1 innings, while Tyler Wild '14 (Quaker Hill, Conn./Saint Bernard School) had a 3-for-5 game and helped his team grab a 3-0 edge. George Buteau '15 (South Burlington, Vt./Trinity-Pawling School) had two hits, a run and an RBI, while McGuirl and Alec Tice '14 (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) each had two knocks. Saint Michael's plated four runs on 10 hits in five innings against an Owl pitcher who had yielded no runs on six hits in 14 frames this year.

Austin Ziskie '12 (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) delivered a three-hit shutout against New Haven, where he fanned nine in nine innings and walked only two in the program's first shutout since March 1, 2001, and first conference shutout since April 26, 1993. Tim McDonnell '12 (Durham, N.H./Oyster River) drove in the game's only run, plating Elderton, who joined Begnoche in smacking doubles. During the nightcap, Andrew DuPrat '13 (Fairfax, Vt./BFA-Fairfax) struck out three in 7.2 innings of work, while Elderton was 3-for-4. Wild had two hits and Tice had two walks. McGuirl and Jason Moore '14 (Avon, Conn./Northwest Catholic) both drove in runs, including when Moore picked up his first college hit.


Men's Lacrosse (5-1, 1-1 NE-10) Picks Up First Conference Win of Season, Extends Win Streak to Four

The Saint Michael's College men's lacrosse team won its only game last week, picked up its first conference victory of the season. The Purple Knights, who received votes toward last week's United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) national poll, claimed a 10-3 win at Assumption College on Saturday.

Marty Vanzo '13 (Westford, Vt./Essex/Vermont) led the Purple Knights with four markers and one assist, all in the first half, while Connor Glackin '14 (South Huntington, N.Y./Saint Anthony's) tallied the first two markers of the game. Kevin Hunt '12 (Johnstown, N.Y./Johnstown) had a goal and two assists, and Andrew Buccellato '12 (Glen Rock, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) recorded a goal and a helper to push his career point total to 99. Paul Tortora Jr. '12 (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep) and Tim McDonald '14 (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) each tallied a goal, scoring 46 seconds apart early in the fourth quarter, while Peter Hanson '12 (Andover, Mass./Andover) had seven ground balls and six caused turnovers. Chris Casserly '14 (Kensington, N.H./Exeter) was 7-of-11 on draws, and Chris DeMairo '14 (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) earned the victory with six saves.


Women's Lacrosse (2-3, 0-2 NE-10) Falls to Two Nationally-Ranked Teams, Stays Close with No. 7 Stonehill

The Saint Michael's College women's lacrosse team went 0-2 last week, dropping contests to two nationally-ranked opponents in three days. The Purple Knights lost an 11-9 decision on Thursday to Stonehill College, which was tied for seventh in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) national poll, before slipping to No. 1 Le Moyne College by a 13-1 count at home on Saturday.

Eliza Scoba '12 (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) led the Purple Knights with two goals and two assists against Stonehill, while Courtney Piper '15 (Wolfeboro, N.H./Brewster Academy) had two markers and dished out one assist. Crystal King '14 (South Burlington, Vt./South Burlington) added two tallies, while Claire Martin '14 (Mattapoisett, Mass./Bishop Stang) had five draw controls and seven ground balls. Sandy Palumbo '12 (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) made 10 saves.

During the contest against top-ranked Le Moyne, Scoba tallied the lone goal for the Purple Knights, while Palumbo made 13 saves and added two ground balls and two caused turnovers.


Softball (3-11, 1-5 NE-10) Opens Conference Schedule with First Victory at Merrimack in Five Years

The Saint Michael's College softball team went 1-5 last week during the opening week of its Northeast-10 Conference schedule. The Purple Knights split a doubleheader at Merrimack College on Tuesday, claiming an 8-7 victory in the initial contest before falling, 9-1 in five innings, as they earned their first victory at Merrimack since 2007. During the earliest home opener in program history, Saint Michael's was swept by Stonehill College, 7-5 and 7-0, on Saturday before falling against visiting Franklin Pierce University, 5-2 and 4-2, on Sunday.

Brittany Cantore '13 (Saint Johnsbury, Vt./Saint Johnsbury Academy) launched her first career home run while going 2-for-3 with two RBIs in game one against Merrimack, while Stephanie Frank '13 (Essex, Vt./Essex) and Sarah Murray '15 (Wallingford, Conn./Sheehan) each drove in two. Frank doubled while earning the victory, fanning four in a complete-game effort, and Greer Lemnah '14 (Lyndon Center, Vt./Lyndon Institute) scored twice. In game two, Frank finished with a hit, an RBI and a walk. Bethany Falls '14 (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) doubled and walked, while Lemnah added a single and a walk. Frank took the loss before Laura McCormack '14 (Natick, Mass./Natick) struck out four in relief.

During the opener against Stonehill, Frank yielded only one earned run during a complete-game effort, striking out three without walking a batter. Brittany Regis '14 (Monroe, N.H./Saint Johnsbury Academy) was 3-for-4 with two stolen bases and a double, while Falls went 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBIs and a home run. Murray tacked on two runs and two hits, including a double. Amanda Brigante '14 (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) went 2-for-2 in the nightcap, while Carleen McLaughlin '13 (Branford, Conn./Branford) doubled. McCormack struck out four in five innings.

In the initial game against Franklin Pierce, Murray was 2-for-3 with an RBI, a run and a double, while Cantore also drove in a run. Frank struck out two during seven innings. Brigante was 2-for-3 with an RBI in the second game, while Falls and Lemnah both had a hit and a run. Cantore doubled, while McCormack allowed two earned runs in four innings and fanned four before Frank tossed three shutout frames, retiring the final seven batters. 
 
Men's Tennis (4-3, 3-3 NE-10) Returns After Month Layoff, Drops Decision to Adelph 

The Saint Michael's College men's tennis team lost its only match last week, dropping a Northeast-10 Conference match to Adelphi University by a count of 8-1 on Saturday, which was its first match since Feb. 25. 

Eric Parziale '13 (Pinehurst, N.C./Pinecrest) and Nick Bosco '14 (Glastonbury, Conn./East Catholic) teamed up at No. 1 doubles to claim the lone Purple Knight victory. Bosco and Parziale nearly took both their singles matches but eventually lost in three sets at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively.

Women's Tennis (8-5, 7-1 NE-10) Returns from Florida Trip and Drops First Conference Match of Season

The Saint Michael's College women's tennis team lost its only match last week, returning from a Spring Break trip to Florida and dropping an 8-1 decision against regionally-ranked Adelphi University on Saturday. The visiting Panthers were ranked eighth in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East region poll.

Alex Dalton '13 (South Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) earned the lone victory for the Purple Knights in the second singles slot, while Jean-Marie McGrath '13 (Niwot, Colo./Alexander Dawson School) nearly completed a comeback but eventually fell in three sets at No. 4.  Saint Michael's dropped its three doubles matches by two points apiece. Eileen Mullowney '12 (Burlington, Vt./ Burlington) and Emily Magee '13 (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) lost, 8-6, in the top slot, while McGrath and Caroline Martin '15 (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) narrowly fell, 9-7, at No. 2. Emily Ogilvy '12 (Bedford, N.H./Trinity) and Caroline Toutoungi '15 (Weston, Conn./Weston) dropped an 8-6 decision while holding down the third position.

Baseball (3-6) Plays Two Nationally-Ranked Opponents During Completion of Spring Break Trip

The Saint Michael's College baseball team went 2-5 last week while completing its nine-game Spring Break trip to Florida. The Purple Knights defeated Caldwell (N.J.) College, 10-4, on Monday before dropping the initial game of a doubleheader with Nyack (N.Y.) College on Tuesday, 12-0, and then besting the Warriors by a score of 15-5 in the nightcap. They played in their second doubleheader in two days on Wednesday, where they fell 5-1 to Saint Thomas Aquinas (N.Y.) College in the first game and then dropped a 14-5 decision to No. 24 Nova Southeastern (Fla.) University. Saint Michael's concluded its trip by falling to Merrimack College, 10-0, on Thursday and then 9-1 to nationally-ranked Franklin Pierce University on Saturday.

Austin Ziskie '12 (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) yielded two earned runs over 6.1 innings and fanned six batters against Caldwell, while Corey Livingston '14 (Hartford, Conn./East Catholic) earned the save, allowing one run during 2.2 frames of relief. Chadwick Estey '12 (New Haven, Vt./Mount Abraham Union) and Jacob Begnoche '13 (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) each had three hits, two runs and two RBIs, while Collin Fishman '13 (Bethesda, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) had two hits and two RBIs. Alec Tice '14 (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) and Nicky Elderton '15 (Shelburne, Vt./Rice Memorial) added two knocks apiece, and Tyler Wild '14 (Quaker Hill, Conn./Saint Bernard School) scored twice and stole a pair of bases. George Buteau '15 (South Burlington, Vt./Trinity-Pawling School) also had two of the Purple Knights' six steals.

During the first contest against Nyack, Buteau went 2-for-2, and Nick Myers '14 (Canton, Conn./The Master's School) yielded three earned runs in four innings while striking out three. Matthew Dunn '12 (Needham, Mass./Needham) allowed one earned run in two innings of relief, fanning a pair of batters. Will Corkum '15 (Ipswich, Mass./Ipswich) picked up the win in the nightcap, yielding three hits and no earned runs over six innings in his college debut, while striking out five. Tice '14 had three hits, including two doubles, and four RBIs, while Buteau added three hits and two RBIs. Don McGuirl '15 (Warwick, R.I./Saint Sebastian's School) was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs, while Chris Puliafico '14 (Sharon, Mass./Sharon) and Wild each had two hits and runs.

Harry Klein '15 (Rockville, Md./The Avalon School) allowed three earned runs over five innings during his first college start against Saint Thomas Aquinas before Barry Maily '15 (Moosup, Conn./Plainfield) yielded one run on two hits over the final three frames, fanning two. Estey, McGuirl and Wild each had a hit and walked, while Tice drove in McGuirl for the lone Purple Knight run.

The Purple Knights led No. 24 Nova Southeastern, 3-1, into the sixth inning due in part to Andrew DuPrat '13 (Fairfax, Vt./BFA-Fairfax), who allowed only one run prior to the sixth. DuPrat allowed five runs over 5.2 innings and struck out four. Estey was 2-for-3 with two runs, Bryan Geary '12 (Milton, Vt./Milton/Skidmore) added two hits, and McGuirl drove in three runs.

Against their first NE-10 foe, Merrimack, the Purple Knights received hits from Elderton, Estey, Livingston and Puliafico. Fishman struck out six in five innings before Dunn yielded one earned run in three frames.

Tice led the Purple Knights with two hits, including a double, against Franklin Pierce, which was ranked 20th and 22nd in different national polls. Wild also contributed a double. Fishman and McGuirl added hits, with McGuirl scoring a run. Andrew Kelley '13 (Lincoln, N.H./Lin-Wood) tossed six innings, allowing five runs and struck out one.


Men's Lacrosse (4-1, 0-1 NE-10) Wins All Three Contests During California Spring Break Trip

The Saint Michael's College men's lacrosse team went 3-0 last week during its Spring Break trip to California, outscoring its opponents 46-16. The Purple Knights defeated Adams State (Colo.) College, 18-7, on Monday at Notre Dame de Namur (Calif.) University's home field and then claimed a 16-7 victory at the Dominican University of California by a score of 16-7 on Thursday. They concluded their trip by besting host Notre Dame de Namur, 12-2, on Saturday.

Marty Vanzo '13 (Westford, Vt./Essex/Vermont) led the Purple Knights with three markers and one assist against Adams State, while Paul Tortora Jr. '12 (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep) and Max Zuccarini '12 (Medfield, Mass./Medfield/Quinnipiac) each contributed four points. Connor Glackin '14 (South Huntington, N.Y./Saint Anthony's) added two goals and one assist, Kevin Hunt '12 (Johnstown, N.Y./Johnstown) and Evan Antolino '14 (Exeter, N.H./Exeter) had one marker and two assists apiece, and Pete Donnally '13 (Madison, N.J./Morristown-Beard School) found the back of the net twice. Matt Dromeshauser '15 (Norwell, Mass./Norwell) tallied his first collegiate goal and finished with an assist, while Chris DeMairo '14 (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) earned the victory with six saves. Andrew Landers '14 (Manchester, Mass./Proctor Academy) and Dylan Florian '15 (West Hartford, Conn./Kingswood Oxford/Sacred Heart) finished with five and three saves, respectively, during their collegiate debuts. Chris Casserly '14 (Kensington, N.H./Exeter) won all six of his face-offs, and Matt Casella '15 (Yonkers, N.Y./Fordham Prep) went 7-of-11 on draws.

Donnally finished with five goals against Dominican, while Hunt added four markers and one helper. Vanzo struck twice and had one assist, while Glackin and Tortora contributed one tally and two assists apiece. Casserly won nine face-offs, while DeMairo made five stops.

During their final game in California, the Purple Knights were led by Donnally, who contributed two tallies and two helpers, while Hunt finished with three goals. Vanzo and Zuccarini had two markers and one assist each, while DeMairo made two saves. Landers finished with two saves in relief, and Casella was 5-for-6 on draws.


Women's Lacrosse (2-1) Claims Victories in Both Georgia Contests Over Spring Break

The Saint Michael's College women's lacrosse team went 2-0 last week during its two-game trip to the Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia. The Purple Knights defeated host SCAD, 15-12, on Wednesday, snapping the Bees' 10-game win streak, before claiming a 15-10 victory over Tiffin (Ohio) University on Thursday.

Eliza Scoba '12(Franklin, Mass./Franklin) had a career-high-tying five goals against SCAD, while Crystal King '14 (South Burlington, Vt./South Burlington) added two markers and an assist. Alexa Coleman '14 (Boxford, Mass./Masconomet Regional), Kate Boyer '15 (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle) and Courtney Piper '15 (Wolfeboro, N.H./Brewster Academy) each tallied two goals. Beth Cusimano '14 (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) dished off three assists, while Sandy Palumbo '12 (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) made eight saves.

In the Purple Knights' victory over Tiffin, Scoba netted a hat trick, while Palumbo earned the win.


Softball (2-6) Finishes Florida Spring Trip with 2-0 Victory, Snaps Four-Game Skid

The Saint Michael's College softball team went 2-6 last week during the National Training Center Spring Games in Clermont, Florida. The Purple Knights fell on Monday to West Chester (Pa.) University, 8-0, in five innings and the University of Bridgeport, 5-3, in nine innings before splitting a doubleheader with Saint Thomas Aquinas (N.Y.) College on Tuesday. They earned a 9-8 victory in eight innings before falling 6-0 in the nightcap. Saint Michael's lost on Thursday to Limestone (S.C.) College by a 15-1 count in five innings and against Minot (N.D.) State University, 2-0. The concluded on Friday, as the Purple Knights were defeated by West Chester, 18-0, in five innings before picking up a 2-0 victory over New York Institute of Technology.

Four Purple Knights had one hit apiece in the opening contest against West Chester, including Sarah Murray '15 (Wallingford, Conn./Sheehan) picking up the first hit of her career. Against Bridgeport, Stephanie Frank '13 (Essex, Vt./Essex) did not allow her first hit until there were two outs in the fifth inning, eventually allowing two earned runs in nine innings while also batting 3-for-4 with a double. Bethany Falls '14 (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) drove in two runs, while Murray had a hit, an RBI and a walk. Greer Lemnah '14 (Lyndon Center, Vt./Lyndon Institute) walked, scored and added a knock.

Frank earned a complete-game victory and hit a walk-off single during the Purple Knights' win over Saint Thomas Aquinas. She fanned three and went 3-for-5 with two stolen bases, while Regis was 2-for-4 with three runs and three steals. Carleen McLaughlin '13 (Branford, Conn./Branford) walked twice. During the second game, Amanda Brigante '14 (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) was 2-for-3 with a stolen base, while Laura McCormack '14 (Natick, Mass./Natick) yielded only one earned run during 4.2 innings and struck out two.

Against Limestone, Falls doubled and scored, while Lemnah and Brittany Regis '14 (Monroe, N.H./Saint Johnsbury Academy) added hits. Lindsay Houston '13 (Concord, N.H./Concord) hit a sac fly. Versus Minot State, Frank allowed just one earned run during a complete game, and Lemnah picked up a hit.

Brittany Cantore '13 (Saint Johnsbury, Vt./Saint Johnsbury Academy) drew a walk during the second game against West Chester before Frank threw a four-hit shutout against NYIT. Falls and Murray each had an RBI, with Falls doubling. Lemnah and Regis both singled and scored during the first inning.

 

Women's Tennis (8-4, 7-0 NE-10) Completes Florida Trip, Drops Match to Nationally-Ranked Florida Tech

 

The Saint Michael's College women's tennis team went 1-3 last week, completing a trip to Florida during which it matched up against one nationally-ranked team and one regionally-ranked opponent. The Purple Knights fell to Franklin & Marshall College, 6-3, on Monday before dropping a 9-0 decision at No. 36 Florida Institute of Technology on Tuesday. Saint Michael's fell on Thursday to the regionally-ranked University of Indianapolis, 9-0, and concluded the trip by claiming a 5-4 victory over the State University of New York at Plattsburgh on Friday.


Emily Magee '13 (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) earned a victory in the top singles spot against Franklin & Marshall, while Jean-Marie McGrath '13 (Niwot, Colo./Alexander Dawson School) won at No. 4. Caroline Toutoungi '15 (Weston, Conn./Weston) triumphed in the sixth position.

During the team's contest against nationally-ranked Florida Tech, Emily Ogilvy '12 (Bedford, N.H./Trinity) nearly took a match from the Panthers but eventually fell in three sets at No. 6 singles.

Caroline Martin '15 (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) won the lone match for the Purple Knights against Indianapolis, claiming a 6-4, 0-8, 15-13 victory at the No. 3 singles position.

Ogilvy and Toutoungi sided for a second-position doubles win against SUNY Plattsburgh, while Kayla Dowd '15 (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) and Michelle Moreau '15 (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) also joined for a win. Alex Dalton '13 (South Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) won in straight sets at No. 2 singles, while Toutoungi and Dowd earned three-set wins at four and five, respectively.

Baseball (1-1) Splits Double Header in Florida to Start Season

The Saint Michael’s College baseball team went 1-1 last week during the Palm Beach Challenge, as the Purple Knights start their season with a week-long trip to Florida. The Purple Knights played Concordia (N.Y.) College twice on Sunday, picking up a 10-8 victory in the initial game and then dropping a 13-4 decision.

Andrew Kelley '13 (Lincoln, N.H./Lin-Wood) earned the win in game one, yielding three earned runs on three hits with five strikeouts in four innings. Chris Hoey '12 (Huntington, N.Y./Saint Anthony's) pitched 1.2 shutout innings of relief before Corey Livingston '14 (Hartford, Conn./East Catholic) tossed a no-hit seventh inning for his first career save. The victory was the first of interim head coach Matt Rodovick's career. Eight Purple Knights picked up hits, with George Buteau '15 (South Burlington, Vt./Trinity-Pawling School) and Don McGuirl '15 (Warwick, R.I./Saint Sebastian's School) notching two hits and RBIs apiece. Alec Tice '14 (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) added two knocks, while Nick Nelson '14 (Spofford, N.H./Keene) and Tyler Wild '14 (Quaker Hill, Conn./Saint Bernard School) had a pair of RBIs each, and  Chris Puliafico '14 (Sharon, Mass./Sharon) scored two runs.

During the second game of the double header, Jesse Sullivan '12 (Saugus, Mass./Pingree School) yielded one earned run in five innings, while striking out one and not walking anyone. Michael Robinson '12 (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Warde) went 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI off the bench.

Men's Lacrosse (1-1, 0-1 NE-10) Opens Season with Victory, Drops First NE-10 Contest

The Saint Michael’s College men's lacrosse team went 1-1 last week, picking up its first win under head coach Brian Kingsbury in the season opener. The Purple Knights defeated Mercy (N.Y.) College, 9-5, at home on Tuesday and then fell at Saint Anselm College, 6-5, on Friday in their first Northeast-10 Conference match-up of the year.
Pete Donnally '14 (Madison, N.J./Morristown-Beard School) led the Purple Knights against Mercy with a career-high six goals. Marty Vanzo '14 (Westford, Vt./Essex/Vermont) tallied one goal and one assist, while Connor Glackin '15 (South Huntington, N.Y./Saint Anthony's) and Tim McDonald '14 (Walpole, Mass./Walpol) each found the back of the net. The marker was McDonald's first as a collegian. Kevin Hunt '12 (Johnstown, N.Y./Johnstown) and Max Zuccarini (Medfield, Mass./Medfield/Quinnipiac) contributed two helpers apiece, while Chris DeMairo '14 (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) made seven saves. Peter Hanson '12 (Andover, Mass./Andover) and Evan White (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) caused four turnovers and scooped up 10 ground ball respectively.

During the contest at Saint Anselm Donnally scored twice for the Purple Knights, while Hunt added a goal and an assist. Vanzo and Glackin each netted one marker, DeMairo had 13 stops and White scooped up six ground balls.

Women's Lacrosse (0-1) Falls in Overtime during Season Opening Contest

The Saint Michael’s College women's lacrosse team opened its season for the third consecutive year with a contest against Division III NCAA Tournament qualifier Keene State College. The Purple Knights hosted Keene State on Thursday and fell 10-9 in overtime after erasing a four-goal, second-half deficit.  

 Eliza Scoba '12(Franklin, Mass./Franklin) led the Purple Knights with three goals, while Crystal '14 King (South Burlington, Vt./South Burlington) tallied two markers and added one assist. Beth Cusimano '14 (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) finished with one goal, while Hannah Beardsley '15(Essex, Mass./Manchester Essex Regional), Melissa Jaskiewicz '15 (Kensington, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) and Courtney Piper '15 (Wolfeboro, N.H./Brewster Academy) all tallied their first collegiate goals to finish off the scoring. Sandy Palumbo '12 (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) finished with 15 saves and six ground balls, and Caroline Casper '14 (Norfolk, Mass./Thayer Academy) dished off two assists.


Sandell Ties Two Freshman Skiing Records, Helps Purple Knights Finish 19th at NCAA Championship

The Saint Michael's College skiing teams finished the two-day NCAA Championship on Saturday, by taking 19th place out of 21 teams. Fredrik Sandell '15 (Oslo, Norway/Donski Alpine), the only Purple Knight to participate, tied two freshman records and single-handedly delivered the school its best performance since 2000. The Purple and Gold finished with 33 points, while the University of Vermont won with 832 points.  

Sandell had the best giant slalom placement for a Saint Michael's men's alpine skier at the NCAA Championship since 2000 on Thursday, grabbing 26th at the Bridger Bowl to match the best finish ever turned in a by a male Purple Knight first-year. Sandell posted a two-run showing of 1:34.71 in a field of 35 racers, just one second out of the top 12 and his second-run time of 46.52 seconds was the 11th-best finish. During the second day, Sandell tied the program's record for a first-year by taking 21st during the men's slalom, in a time of 1:53.47. Sandell was ninth among the 18 skiers from Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association (EISA) schools.
