This Week in Saint Michael’s College Athletics ‒ January 16-22

Men’s Basketball (7-10, 6-7 NE-10) Drops Two More Decisions by 10 Points or Less

The Saint Michael’s College men’s basketball team went 0-2 last week, losing two Northeast-10 Conference match-ups by a combined 13 points. The Purple Knights fell to the University of New Haven at home, 75-65, on Tuesday and then traveled to the College of Saint Rose on Saturday, dropping a 71-68 decision. Saint Michael's has suffered six setbacks by six points or fewer this winter.

Sophomore Mike Holton Jr. (Portland, Ore./The Winchendon School) led the way with a game-high 26 points and six assists against the Chargers, while senior Tom Ward (Brighton, East Sussex, England/Saint Francis [N.Y.]) contributed 16 points after shooting 5-for-7 from beyond the arc. Freshman Corey Crawford (Dover, Del./The Phelps School) notched seven points, classmate James Cambronne (De Bary, Fla./The Winchendon School) blocked three shots, and junior Derek Knutty (Rocklin, Calif./Whitney) had six boards.

Holton once again tallied the game high at Saint Rose, scoring 23 points, as the Purple Knights yielded the winning bucket with three seconds left. Crawford, who sank two tying free throws with 24 seconds left, totaled 16 points while dishing out three assists. Cambronne and freshman Dom Ditlefsen (Portland, Ore./Sunset School) each contributed nine points, with Cambronne adding six rebounds and four blocks.


Women’s Basketball (7-10, 4-9 NE-10) Posts Two Late Comebacks, Earns a Victory and Loses by One

The Saint Michael’s College women’s basketball team went 1-1 last week in Northeast-10 Conference play, posting an 8-0 run in the final minute of each contest to nab one triumph but lose just before the buzzer in the second outing. The Purple Knights picked up a 64-57 victory over the University of New Haven at home on Wednesday before traveling to the College of Saint Rose on Saturday and losing 62-61.

Sophomore Cara Deroy (Hamden, Conn./Hamden) netted 18 of her career-high 20 points in the second half versus New Haven. Senior Coreen Hennessy (Chatham, N.H./Fryeburg Academy) was 3-for-5 from three-point range en route to 15 points and three steals, while classmate Samantha Steinmetz (Washington, Conn./Shepaug Valley) contributed 11 rebounds and four blocks, which were both career highs. Sophomore Alexa Long (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) had nine points and eight boards, while junior Nicole Adach (Schenectady, N.Y./Mohonasen) added nine points, dropping in the go-ahead hoop with 48.1 seconds left.

Deroy totaled 14 points and three assists at Saint Rose, and Adach tallied 13 points and eight boards while converting a go-ahead three-point play with 23 seconds remaining, but the Golden Knights scored the winning hoop with three ticks left. Hennessy and junior Megan Olsen (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) each contributed nine points, with Olsen also collecting four steals. Senior Caitlin Quinn (Oakdale, Conn./Montville) added eight points and three steals, while Steinmetz swatted three shots.


Men’s Ice Hockey (3-10-2, 1-8-1 ECAC East, 1-1-1 NE-10) Falls Twice to No. 1 Norwich

The Saint Michael’s College men’s ice hockey team went 0-2 last week in an Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) East home-and-home series against No. 1 Norwich University. The Purple Knights hosted the Cadets on Friday and dropped a 7-1 decision before traveling to Northfield on Saturday and falling 8-0. Norwich is the top-ranked team in the nation according to the U.S. College Hockey Online (USCHO) Division III poll.

During the first match-up, the Purple Knights trailed the top-ranked Cadets by only one goal nearly midway through the contest. Freshman Will Cote (Quebec City, Quebec/Rice Memorial) tallied for the hosts, while junior Mike Dizgun (Kirkland, Quebec/OCN Blizzard) had 33 saves in his 50th career contest.

On Saturday, the Purple Knights blanked the third-highest-scoring team in Division III during the first period while outshooting them 7-4 before the Cadets pulled away. Dizgun finished with 20 stops, which put him over 1,500 saves for his career.


Women’s Ice Hockey (1-14-1, 0-11-1 ECAC East) Drops Two Home Contests, Including One in Overtime

The Saint Michel’s College women’s ice hockey team went 0-2 last week at home in Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) East play. The Purple Knights lost to Nichols College, 4-3, in overtime on Friday and then dropped a 4-0 decision to Manhattanville College on Saturday. Saint Michael's has taken five of its losses by just one goal this winter.

Against Nichols, senior Madelena Santore (Millington, N.J./New Jersey Rockets) and freshman Fernanda Saavedra (Miami, Fla./Pittsburg Penguins Elite) tallied for the hosts, with Saavedra netting the first goal of her career. Freshman Kristen Spulecki (Orchard Park, N.Y./Buffalo Bison) provided two assists, and junior Erin Stevens (Watertown, Conn./Connecticut Polar Bears) made 33 stops.

Stevens shined during the loss to Manhattanville, as she piled up 38 saves and allowed just two even-strength goals against a team that grabbed a lead against top-ranked Norwich the evening prior.


Men's (2-6) Swimming & Diving Earns Comeback Victory with Strong Final Event as Women (3-4) Fall

The Saint Michael’s College men’s swimming and diving team rallied in the final event on Sunday to down visiting Saint Lawrence University, 115-114, while the women fell, 122-101.

The men claimed victory after the 200-yard freestyle relay teams collected 15 points in the final event, as the Purple Knights trailed 112-100 heading into the final race. The 200 free relay team that brought Saint Michael's within 112-111 consisted of senior Chris Jones (Santa Fe, N.M./Saint Michael's), juniors Kyle Esposito (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott), Andrew Marshall (Kittery, Maine/Saint Thomas Aquinas/Saint Joseph's [ME]) and freshman Matt Pearson (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk). The second quartet of senior Michael Sprague (Sharon, Mass./Sharon) and sophomores Brandon Gurdak (Winchester, Mass./Winchester)¸ Nicholas Lamana (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) and Derick Logan (Cape May Court House, N.J./Middle Township) finished second, with Sprague swimming the anchor leg to claim four points for the Purple Knights and clinch the comeback victory.

Senior Dan Healy (South Burlington, Vt./South Burlington) won the 50 free and 100-yard backstroke, while freshman Nathan Paluso (Windham, Maine/Windham) topped the 100-yard breaststroke field.

During the women's meet, seniors Kaytlyn Kelley (Jefferson, Mass./Wachusett Regional) and Eileen Mullowney (Burlington, Vt./Burlington) each played a role in three wins. Kelley bested the 100 back and 200-yard individual medley fields, and Mullowney won the 100 and 200 free competitions. Each swam a leg for the top 200 free relay, joining sophomore Julie Mullowney (Burlington, Vt./Burlington) and freshman Steph Nadow (Charlton, Mass./Saint Peter-Marian). Julie Mullowney also won the 100 breast.


Skiing Starts Season with Bates College Carnival, Sandell Posts Pair of Top-10 Finishes in Collegiate Debut

The Saint Michael's College skiing teams finished the season-opening Bates College Carnival on Saturday by taking 10th place out of 15 teams, which is where they stood after the first day of the competition on Friday.

Freshman Fredrik Sandell cracked the top 10 in an Alpine race both days, including a sixth-place finish in the giant slalom in his collegiate debut on Friday and a 10-place showing in Saturday's slalom. Sophomore Carl-Oscar Bredengen (Reistad, Norway/Donski VGS) took 21st out of 80 racers in the slalom. In the women's slalom, graduate student Heidi Robbins (Mendon, Vt./Killington Mountain School/Saint Lawrence) was 19th in a field of 73, while freshman Shannon Conroy nabbed 22nd. Junior Gabbi Hall (Incline Village, Nev./Forest Charter School) was 23rd in the giant slalom.

Junior Colin Delaney (Lake Placid, N.Y./National Sports Academy) had the best performance by a Purple Knight men's Nordic skier both days, including finishing in 59th place out of 110 on Saturday during the 10k classic mass start race. Sophomore Gabrielle Naranja (Fort Kent, Maine/Fort Kent Community) had the best showing both days for the women.

This Week in Saint Michael's College Athletics - January 9-15


Men’s Basketball (7-8, 6-5 NE-10) Picks up Two Overtime Wins, Including Longest Game in School History

The Saint Michael’s College men’s basketball team went 2-0 last week, earning overtime victories in a couple Northeast-10 Conference match-ups. It first defeated host Southern Connecticut State University, 109-104, in four overtimes on Wednesday in the longest game in program history and then picked up a victory at home on Saturday by beating American International College, 81-76, in one overtime.

Sophomore Mike Holton Jr. (Portland, Ore./The Winchendon School) led the way at Southern Connecticut State with 30 points, reaching the 700-point plateau for his career, while factoring in on each point of a 10-0 run that ended regulation and forced overtime. Junior Travis Warech (Pine Brook, N.J./Montville) posted a double-double of 23 points and a career-high 13 rebounds, while freshman Corey Crawford (Dover, Del./The Phelps School) tossed in a season-high 20 points, including one from beyond the arc with four seconds left in the third overtime to force the final stanza. Freshman James Cambronne (De Bary, Fla./The Winchendon School) contributed 13 points and three blocks and helped extend the game by beating the buzzer with a put-back at the end of the first overtime. Senior Tyler Schilling (Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka) moved into eighth place in program history in career rebounds (821), with nine, to pass Todd Roberts ’01 (815).

Schilling led the Purple Knights with 13 points and nine rebounds against the Yellow Jackets. Crawford also contributed 13 points to go along with four helpers and zero turnovers, while Holton finished with 13 points, including a lay-up with 8.8 seconds left to force the extra session. Junior Derek Knutty (Rocklin, Calif./Whitney) and Cambronne each tallied 12 points in the win. Freshman Mike Thompson (Rosedale, N.Y./Christ The King) added seven points and six rebounds.


Women’s Basketball (6-9, 3-8 NE-10) Drops Two by Five Points Each, Extends Defensive Run

The Saint Michael’s College women’s basketball team went 0-2 last week in Northeast-10 Conference contests, dropping a pair of five-point decisions, bringing its season total to seven losses by six points or less. However, the Purple Knights have yielded 60 points or less to seven straight opponents, their longest run since a 16-game stretch that bridged the 1979-80 and 1980-81 seasons. Saint Michael’s lost at Southern Connecticut State University on Wednesday, 60-55, and then fell to American International College, 52-47, at home on Saturday.

The Purple Knights nearly completed a second-half double-digit comeback before falling to Southern Connecticut State. Senior Coreen Hennessy (Chatham, N.H./Fryeburg Academy) led Saint Michael’s with 16 points, while classmate Caitlin Quinn (Oakdale, Conn./Montville) finished with 12 points, thanks to three buckets from beyond the arc. Junior Nicole Adach (Schenectady, N.Y./Mohonasen) pulled down a career-high 14 rebounds, and sophomore Cara Deroy (Hamden, Conn./Hamden) had a career-best seven helpers. Freshman Morgan Jenkins (Revere, Mass./Revere), who entered the game with a total of eight points in five games, notched nine points on 4-of-4 shooting.

Hennessy once again led the way for the Purple Knights with a career-high 20 points during a loss to American International. Adach notched a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds to go along with four steals, while junior Megan Olsen (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) finished with seven points, a career-high 10 rebounds, four assists and two blocks. Quinn tied Anne Marie McLoughlin ’91 for fourth in program history with the 147th three-pointer of her career.


Men’s Ice Hockey (3-8-2, 1-6-1 ECAC East, 1-1-1 NE-10) Picks Up First NE-10 Victory in Three-Game Week

The Saint Michael’s College men’s ice hockey team went 1-2 on the road last week while picking up its first win of the season in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Purple Knights started the week off by defeating host Southern New Hampshire University, 5-3, in an NE-10 match-up on Tuesday before they headed to the Boston area for two more games. On Friday, the University of Massachusetts at Boston tallied once in each period to earn a 3-1 victory over the Purple Knights and then on Saturday, Babson College rallied in the third period and scored during the extra session to take a 4-3 overtime victory.

The Purple Knights netted four power-play markers, going 4-for-7 with the man advantage, as they skated past Southern New Hampshire. Junior captain Josh Geary (Wellesley, Mass./Phillips Andover Academy) led the way with one goal and three assists, while classmates Michael Jangro (Reading, Mass./Valley Jr. Warriors) and Connor Logan (Shelburne, Vt./Green Mountain Glades) each finished with a goal and a helper. Junior Dan Evarts (Hinesburg, Vt./Green Mountain Glades) and freshman A.J. Pieprzak (Barrie, Ontario/Ridley College) each put one in the back of the net. Junior Justin Castagna (Los Alamitos, Calif./Los Angeles Kings) dished off two assists, while classmate Mike Dizgun (Kirkland, Quebec/OCN Blizzard) made 29 saves.

Saint Michael’s had its three-game unbeaten streak snapped at UMass Boston despite a strong performance from Dizgun, who turned aside 38 shots, including 18 in the first period. Junior Petr Soustal (Unicov, Czech Republic/Gymnazium Unicov) tallied the lone goal for Saint Michael’s, while senior Brady Earle (Columbia, Md./The Gunnery) and Pieprzak picked up the assists.

The week ended an overtime loss to Babson, where Dizgun piled up 40 saves, including 15 in the third period. Junior Rich Rodeschini (Katonah, N.Y./Canterbury School) scored his first goal of the season, while classmate Tim McAuliffe (North Reading, Mass./Vermont Academy) and Pieprzak finished off the scoring for the Purple Knights. Earle earned an assist in all three games during the week.


Women’s Ice Hockey (1-12-1, 0-9-1 ECAC East) Keeps No. 2 Norwich Off Board Until Late in Second Period

The Saint Michel’s College women’s ice hockey team fell at No. 2 Norwich University, 6-0, on Thursday during its lone contest. The defending Division III national champions' ranking is according to the latest U.S. College Hockey Online (USCHO) national poll. The Purple Knights were able to hold the Cadets scoreless for the first 35:24 of the game thanks in part to junior Erin Stevens (Watertown, Conn./Connecticut Polar Bears), who finished with 46 saves for the second consecutive game, with both versus Norwich.


Men’s (1-6) and Women’s (3-3) Swimming & Diving Teams Fall Twice During Road Trip to New York

The Saint Michael’s College men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams both fell twice over the weekend during a road trip to New York. On Saturday at the College of Saint Rose, the men lost by a 154-115 final and the women were defeated, 145-117. At Le Moyne College the next day, the men dropped a 174-107 decision, and the women fell by a 162-117 count.

At Saint Rose, senior Eileen Mullowney (Burlington, Vt./Burlington) won the 100-yard freestyle and anchored the top 200 free relay quartet, joining classmate Kaytlyn Kelley (Jefferson, Mass./Wachusett Regional), sophomore Julie Mullowney (Burlington, Vt./Burlington) and freshman Kim Brady (Morris Township, N.J./Academy of Saint Elizabeth). Senior Sammy Sweeney (Waterbury Center, Vt./Harwood Union/Franklin and Marshall) won the 200-yard butterfly.

On the men’s side, senior Dan Healy (South Burlington, Vt./South Burlington) won the 100 back and finished second in the 200 back. Freshman Nathan Paluso (Windham, Maine/Windham) turned in a second-place finish in the 100 breast, while classmate Joe Vo (Springfield, Mass./Cathedral) was second in the one-meter dive.

At Le Moyne, the women's 200 free relay quartet won in 1:44.82, coming within 1.61 seconds of the program mark. Brady, Kelley and both Mullowneys swam legs. Eileen Mullowney won the 200 and 500 free events, while Julie Mullowney won the 50 breast before taking second in the 50 free and 100 breast events, finishing 0.02 seconds shy of the winner in both races.

Healy won the 50 back and took second in the 50 free and 100 back. Freshman Aidan Meehan (Levittown, N.Y./Island Trees) was the runner-up in both the 100 and 200 free races. Senior Michael Sprague (Sharon, Mass./Sharon) was second in the 1,000 free, and sophomore Zack Scahill (Manville, R.I./Lincoln) took second in one of the one-meter diving events by tallying 133 points, just 13.75 short of the high scorer. Paluso and Vo were the runners-up in the 50 breast and a one-meter dive, respectively.

This Week in Saint Michael's College Athletics - January 2-8

Men's Basketball (5-8, 4-5 NE-10) Goes 1-2, Knocks off NE-10 Leader Adelphi

The Saint Michael's College men's basketball team went 1-2 last week in three Northeast-10 Conference games, losing to Pace University, 67-61, at home on Tuesday and at Saint Anselm College, 81-76, on Thursday. The Purple Knights picked up an 83-69 win at NE-10 leader and defending league tournament champion Adelphi University on Saturday. The win was the first for Saint Michael's on Adelphi's home court since Nov. 30, 1996.

The Purple Knights scored 61 points against Pace, the NE-10's defensive leader at 57.1 points per game. Sophomore Mike Holton Jr. (Portland, Ore./The Winchendon School) poured in a team-high 18 points, while junior Travis Warech (Pine Brook, N.J./Montville) tallied 11 points and brought down nine rebounds while collecting three assists. Senior Tyler Schilling (Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka) and freshman James Cambronne (De Bary, Fla./The Winchendon School) each collected nine points.

During the loss to Saint Anselm, Saint Michael's nearly completed a double-digit comeback in the second half. Holton scored a career-high 30 points, shooting 10-for-18 from the floor, including 5-for-9 from behind the three-point line. Freshman Corey Crawford (Dover, Del./The Phelps School) added 10 points and six assists off the bench, Warech tallied 10 points, and Cambronne rejected three shots.

Holton once again led the Purple Knights with 25 points at Adelphi, which qualified for the 2011 NCAA Tournament, shooting 11-of-12 on free throws. Warech moved past the 900-point mark for his career with 13 points, while freshman Dom Ditlefsen (Portland, Ore./Sunset) added 12 points and six rebounds in his first collegiate start. Cambronne tossed in 12 points in 10 minutes, and freshman Mike Thompson (Rosedale, N.Y./Christ the King) had a season-best nine points.


Women's Basketball (6-7, 3-6 NE-10) Drops Two of Three, Wins at Saint Anselm

The Saint Michael's College women's basketball team went 1-2 last week, dropping two close decisions by a combined eight points. The Purple Knights lost to Pace University, 57-51, at home on Tuesday before traveling to Saint Anselm College on Thursday and leaving with a 52-39 victory. On Saturday, Adelphi University beat the buzzer to down Saint Michael's, 60-58.

The Purple Knights fell short of a second-half comeback before falling to Pace. Senior Coreen Hennessy (Chatham, N.H./Fryeburg Academy) scored a game-high 13 points while adding three assists, and classmate Caitlin Quinn (Oakdale, Conn./Montville) tossed in four three-pointers en route to 12 points and five rebounds. Junior Nicole Adach (Schenectady, N.Y./Mohonasen) had 11 points and six boards, while classmate Megan Olsen (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) added eight points off the bench.

Saint Michael's limiting Saint Anselm, one of the top three-point shooting teams in the NE-10, to one three-pointer and held the Hawks 24 points below their season average. Quinn went 4-of-7 from three-point range en route to tallying a game-high-tying 14 points, while Adach matched her with 14 points, shooting 4-for-5 from the floor and 6-of-7 on free throws. Sophomore Alexa Long (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) notched seven rebounds.

At Adelphi, Adach had 15 points, five rebounds and two blocks, while Hennessy added 14 points and three steals. Olsen turned in eight points, six boards and three steals off the bench, Long tacked on nine points, and senior Samantha Steinmetz (Washington, Conn./Shepaug Valley) provided six rebounds and three steals.


Women's Ice Hockey (1-11-1, 0-8-1 ECAC East) Falls to No. 2 Norwich Despite 46 Saves from Stevens

The Saint Michael's College women's ice hockey team fell to defending Division III national champion Norwich University, 9-0, on Friday. The Cadets are the No. 2 team in the latest U.S. College Hockey Online (USCHO) Division III national poll. Junior Erin Stevens (Watertown, Conn./Connecticut Polar Bears) made 46 stops for the Purple Knights, yielding only three markers with the teams playing at even strength.


Men's (1-4) and Women's (3-1) Swimming & Diving Face Division I Opponents in Puerto Rico Meet

The Saint Michael's College men's and women's swimming & diving teams faced Division I competition during their winter training trip in Puerto Rico. The men narrowly fell to La Salle University, 176-165, while the women took third during a meet against both La Salle and Kansas University. The teams competed in an outdoor 50-meter pool instead of the typical 25-yard lengths at indoor NCAA facilities.

Senior Dan Healy (South Burlington, Vt./South Burlington) led Saint Michael's in three events, taking third in the 50-meter backstroke, fifth in the 50-meter freestyle and seventh in the 50-meter butterfly. Freshman Nathan Paluso (Windham, Maine/Windham) won the 200-meter individual medley and placed third in the 50-meter breaststroke, while sophomore Jack Mulderrig (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side), senior Michael Sprague (Sharon, Mass./Sharon) and sophomore Nicholas Lamana (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) finished second, third and fourth, respectively, in the 200 IM. Sophomore Maddie Craig (Westwood, Mass./Westwood) was sixth in the 200 IM, classmate Julie Mullowney (Burlington, Vt./Burlington) was seventh in the 50 breast, and freshman Steph Nadow (Charlton, Mass./Saint Peter-Marian) took ninth in the 50 back. Sophomore Grace Kahn (Fairhope, Ala./Bayside Academy), classmate Emily Dieter (Saint Charles, Ill./Saint Charles North) and junior Corine McAllister (South Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) were seventh, eighth, and ninth, respectively, in the 200 IM.
